Weld RE-4 Education Foundation awards nearly $67,000 in teacher grants

A $5,000 grant will help Windsor High School culinary students enhance their learning in the school’s culinary arts lab, as well as at work-based learning events and catering jobs.

The teacher grant was one of 20 awarded by the Weld RE-4 Education Foundation, for a total of $66,918 to fund culinary arts, music, engineering, literacy, technology and a variety of other learning opportunities.

“I’m always pretty amazed at what the kids get to experience at 17 and 18 years old,” Windsor High culinary arts teacher Cammie Smith said of the lab.

“I’m really excited for this grant and really … appreciate the opportunity,” Smith said.

The Weld RE-4 Education Foundation teacher grant program is powered by community donors, local businesses and others who believe in investing in education. The foundation’s board of directors is made up of parents, alumni, business professionals, community stakeholders and district leadership.

“This mix aims to foster a collaborative partnership between the school district and the broader community — ensuring that decisions about grants, resource allocation and programming reflect both educational needs and community values,” foundation executive director Kelly Moll said in an email.

Donations to the foundation are tax-deductible and can be made at weldre4educationfoundation.com/donate.

Other teacher grants that were funded include $905 for a student-run elementary news station at Range View Elementary, $1,700 for students at Ridgeline Middle School to solder and build solar-powered lanterns for children in Malawi, Africa, and $940 for a lunch reading club at Tozer Primary School.

Thanks to a $3,437 grant, Cory Swanson — who teaches band, orchestra and guitar at Windsor Middle School — will be able to instruct students in basic electrical theory and create circuits to send guitar signals through to modify the sound of the guitar.

“I’m hoping to blend a little bit of … basic hard rock techniques … teach some simple stuff that will sound good through these pedals: ‘Smoke on the Water’ … ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ ” Swanson said, referring to the hit songs by Deep Purple and Nirvana.

The grant dollars went toward five electric guitar and amp setups, as well as various electronic components. Among those components are 30 breadboards — reusable plastic boards with a grid of holes and internal metal clips. Students can use breadboards to assemble electronic circuits without having to solder wires permanently, allowing for rapid testing and experimentation.

Without the teacher grant, Swanson said such purchases and opportunities for his students would have been unlikely.

“Thirty-five hundred dollars just isn’t floating around the school,” he said. “I’m really grateful that the foundation came through with that.”
