Blackhawks Great Troy Murray Has Died

I’m going to be perfectly blunt with you: this is really, really hard to write. I’m devastated. Troy Murray, who most fans will remember as a marvelous player for the Blackhawks and terrific broadcaster for the team, has passed away.

Murray spent 12 years on the ice with the Blackhawks and then two decades in the booth.

On the ice, Murray was a tough, hard-nosed player who was a nightmare to play against. He won the Selke Trophy in 1986 and the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996. With Eddie Olczyk and Curt Frazier, Murray formed the “Clydesdale Line” in the 1980s.

In the booth — and the community — Murray was the complete opposite. He was soft and engaging. He was always smiling. He made others smile. Yes, he knew his hockey and conveyed that knowledge to listeners incredibly well. But Troy also had a wicked sense of humor and always had a twinkle in his eye.

At the end of training camp as I was walking to my car, Troy pulled up and put his car in park, rolled the window down, and we talked for a few minutes. He shared with me that he wasn’t going to be able to start the season on the road with the Blackhawks for radio work because he had some “things to get worked on.” Troy fought through a couple bouts with cancer, and it was back. I told Troy that we love him, and that my family would be praying for him before he pulled away. That was the last time I spoke with him.

Troy Murray may have been the original No. 19 from North Dakota to some. He may have been a hard-nosed center to others. I consider him a friend. And learning that he has passed breaks my heart.

    Rest easy, Muzz.

Here’s the statement from Blackhawks chairman Danny Wirtz:

“The Chicago Blackhawks are deeply heartbroken today as we mourn the loss of Troy Murray, our beloved “Muzz,” and our love and support go out to his family.

Troy was the epitome of a Blackhawk, so far beyond his incredible playing career with a presence felt in every corner of our organization over the last 45 years. He was admired by his teammates and our players, and was so proud to connect generations of Blackhawks through his work with the Blackhawks Alumni Association. He jumped at every call to support our local community with our Foundation. He never missed a chance to say ‘hello’ in our press box and always knew the perfect time for a joke just when someone around the office needed it most. And he absolutely loved bringing Blackhawks hockey to you, our fans, night after night with a dedication to his craft that never wavered to the very end.

During his long and hard battle with cancer, it was often said that Troy didn’t have any ‘give up’ in him. While our front office simply won’t be the same without him, we will carry that spirit forward every day in his honor. We’ll miss you, Troy.”
