Evans should address president’s slur against Somalians

This week the president slurred persons of Somalian heritage with hateful and vile comments. I would encourage Rep. Gabe Evans to go to the well of the House of Representatives to repudiate those comments on behalf of citizens of Somalian heritage who are now United States citizens and others who are here legally under our immigration laws.

These individuals are neighbors, employees, students in our community. These are decent human beings, not garbage, and I trust that Representative Evans will have the courage to speak on behalf of all his constituents.

New tools needed to stop subversion of democracy

Attorney General Phil Weiser has proposed a narrowly drawn, emergency mid-decade redistricting for Colorado and submits that it be put to voters in 2026 as a state constitutional amendment.

This approach isn’t about revenge, as some might argue. Rather, it’s about providing a disincentive for other states to try to rig the next election and, thus, control of the U.S. House in 2026. If other states are not going to play by the rules and therefore subvert our democracy, then we have to find any tools necessary to stop them from doing that. This is all the more important considering the recent SCOTUS ruling on Texas’ extreme redistricting.

I’ve seen Congress be caught flat-footed against the actions of the Trump administration, while relying on an outdated and ineffective Congressional toolbox.

This is a very different time and blue states should take a different course of action to counter the gerrymandering effort pushed by Donald Trump on governors in red states. It’s time to update the toolbox.

The Attorney General’s proposal is not a top down edict. It’s an appeal to voters to think outside the box to address the inequity that would occur if Donald Trump and SCOTUS have their way on this.
