BBC staff ‘bewildered’ by paedophile Huw Edwards’ apparent comeback bid

Former BBC colleagues of Huw Edwards said they were “bemused and bewildered” by the disgraced presenter’s return to the public gaze after he posted a new “moody” picture of himself.

Edwards was handed a six-month suspended jail sentence for making indecent images of children. Insiders said there was “zero chance” of the former news anchor launching a comeback.

Edwards prompted shock among BBC figures after uploading what appeared to be a professionally-taken black-and-white headshot of himself, sporting a brooding expression, on his Facebook account.

His social media accounts have been largely dormant since Edwards was taken off air in July 2023, following reports that he had paid a teenager £35,000 in return for indecent images.

Edwards, who still only a little over halfway through the two-year suspension of his six-month jail term, handed down in September 2024, has set up a new Facebook page and also reactivated his Instagram account, the Daily Mail reported.

The new image prompted rumors that Edwards, previously the BBC’s highest-paid journalist, was making tentative steps towards a comeback.

One BBC news colleague said: “The photo is the talk of the newsroom. There’s no doubt there is a plan behind it. But there is a zero chance of a comeback. What he did is repulsive.”

Seven of the illegal images of children that Edwards admitted to accessing were in category A, the most serious.

Another staffer said: “There was utter bewilderment and bemusement about the photo. Does he really think there is a way back to public life? There was always something unknowable about Huw. This doesn’t look like the image of someone who is feeling contrite.”

Once one of the most familiar faces on TV, charged with breaking the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Edwards has made no public statement since his wife, Vicky Flind, named him as the presenter at the centre of allegations over sexually explicit images in 2023. She said he was in hospital for “serious mental health issues.”

There was speculation that Edwards could now be open to giving a “tell-all” confessional interview.

The BBC is still seeking repayment of £200,000 in licence-fee-funded wages from Edwards, which he received between his initial arrest and eventual dismissal.

A BBC source said: “The money has not been recovered and as has been reported previously, for obvious reasons, the BBC does not expect to work with him again.”

Some believe Edwards could launch his own YouTube channel, or give an exclusive interview to a “free speech” digital platform, such as Piers Morgan’s Uncensored show.

The stepfather of the teenage boy targeted by Edwards for explicit images, condemned the presenter’s return to the public eye.

He told The Sun: “If he thinks he can just put up a picture of himself and it’s going to change the way people think about him, he’s wrong.”

“Any time he raises his head it is an insult to his victims. He needs to realise this is it and disappear.”

Edwards’ return to social media revealed that he appears to continue to enjoy support from some former colleagues.

His Facebook friends include former BBC Radio Wales broadcaster Wyn Thomas. Commenting on Edwards’s profile, he remarked: “Looking good Huw.”

Ben Bawden, a former programme director with the BBC and Ben Ando, who spent more than a decade as a BBC crime and general news correspondent, are also named on the account.

Edwards, a father of five, and Flind are believe to be in the process of separating. His £4.75m Dulwich mansion, which had been on the market, was recently removed from the estate agent’s listings.

Edwards was allowed by the BBC to step down on medical grounds in April 2024. Six months later, the former newsreader admitted in court that he had received 41 indecent images of children from convicted paedophile Alex Williams via WhatsApp. Two images were estimated to show a child aged between seven and nine. Edwards was placed on the sex offenders’ register for seven years.

The BBC was approached for comment.
