Cubs Activate Clay Holmes

The Cubs officially activated Clay Holmes from the 60-day IL for his team debut tonight, the club announced. The right-hander will return to the mound after missing nearly three months with a fractured fibula. Lefty Braxton Garrett is headed back to Triple-A to clear a spot for Holmes. Chicago had an opening on the 40-man roster, so no move was needed there.

Holmes hit the injured list in mid-May after a Spencer Jones comebacker broke his leg. The outing would be his last with the Mets. He came to Chicago along with outfielder Tyrone Taylor in a trade that sent infield prospect Jefferson Rojas to New York. Holmes will make his first Cubs appearance in Kansas City with the team riding a five-game winning streak.

Saturday’s outing will likely be somewhat truncated. Holmes only got up to 73 pitches in his final rehab outing. He went 5 1/3 innings for High-A Brooklyn on Sunday. The Cubs have former starter Colin Rea on regular rest in the bullpen. He’s a candidate to piggyback with Holmes on Saturday.

Holmes was pitching quite well before the injury. The veteran righty notched a 2.39 ERA in nine starts to open the season. He hadn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any outing before the fateful game against the Yankees. Holmes’ 3.68 xFIP and 3.97 SIERA are more in line with his performance last season, but the Cubs would still take that production.

Chicago’s rotation has been crushed by injuries this season. The unit lost Cade Horton to Tommy John surgery in April. Edward Cabrera, Ben Brown, and Matthew Boyd have missed significant time. Justin Steele hasn’t pitched at all this year due to complications from elbow surgery. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer addressed the need at the deadline, adding Holmes and right-hander Kevin Gausman. The latter tossed seven strong frames in his team debut last night. The acquisitions of Holmes and Gausman will push Rea and Javier Assad into swingman/spot starter roles. The club will have another decision to make when Cabrera returns.

Garrett was also acquired at the trade deadline. He came over in a minor swap with the Marlins. The lefty spent a couple of days on the big-league roster but did not make an appearance. He’ll head to Triple-A as a depth option if more injuries occur.

The 29-year-old Garrett was having a strong season with Jacksonville, posting a 2.90 ERA with more than a strikeout per inning across 77 2/3 frames. He struggled mightily in two May appearances with the Marlins. Garrett was tagged for seven earned runs across 4 1/3 innings in a pair of big-league starts. He struck out five but walked eight.
