Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hani Sewilam said on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, the national project to regulate the Nile is part of Egypt’s strategy to preserve the river, protect water resources and ensure sustainable development.
Speaking at a ministry meeting on Tuesday, Sewilam highlighted plans to produce updated digital maps of the Nile’s main riverbed and branches, using advanced technologies including remote sensing, drones, GIS, and artificial intelligence. The maps aim to improve water management and decision-making.
The minister also reported progress in removing illegal constructions along the Rosetta branch of the Nile, with 334 encroachments cleared so far across Monufia, Qalyubia and Beheira governorates. The project is part of Egypt’s broader “Irrigation 2.0” modernization initiative.
Sewilam emphasized the importance of establishing clear river management lines and conducting comprehensive surveys of riverbank lands to ensure compliance with Egypt’s Water Resources Law No. 147 of 2021 and enhance infrastructure safety.
