Folks of note – reporters, agents, executives, etc. – have been arriving in Orlando, Florida much of the day, readying for the 2025 MLB Winter Meetings. Nominally, the event kicks off with tonight’s Hall of Fame announcement, and sometimes you do see some moves break on the Sunday night of Winter Meetings week.
Looking ahead for the Chicago Cubs, we know the things they need to accomplish before the offseason is up. The Cubs need to add a starting pitcher who slots into the front half of the rotation. The Cubs need to add arms, plural, in the bullpen (preferably including another later-inning type). The Cubs probably need at least one quality bench bat with some versatility on the infield. The Cubs would probably like to be able to add a little offense to offset the loss of Kyle Tucker and create a little more protection for Owen Caissie and Moises Ballesteros.
Strictly speaking, the Cubs have three more months to get these things – as well as the usual complement of waiver claims, minor trades, and minor league deals – completed.
So, then, you try not to put too much weight on the necessity of completing this move or that move at the Winter Meetings. A great deal will still be on the table after this week, and many-a team has actually gone on to rue “winning the offseason” at the Winter Meetings. Headlines in December don’t always translate to wins in April.
That said, you also can’t just sit back and let the market pass you by. You don’t HAVE TO complete your offseason in Orlando, but there are absolutely dominoes involved in these processes. Once they start to fall, you need to be ready. Or, heck, maybe you need to be one of the early domino-tippers.
Baseball’s offseason doesn’t have a deadline or a salary cap to force the activity like the other major sports. Teams and agents and players can be patient, and try to make the play for leverage over time. But sometimes the action creates a virtual deadline, because once your preferred options are off the board, that’s that. And since we know a lot of activity WILL HAPPEN this week at the Winter Meetings, it’s conceivable that some areas of the stove will become sufficiently hot that the Cubs do, in fact, have to complete this move or that move at the Winter Meetings. I hope they’re ready.
To that end, the Cubs are fortunate that their greatest area of need/impact is in the rotation, where there are so many high-quality options in free agency and in trade. At least some patience has been justifiable, or even warranted. But once that snowball starts rolling down the hill, it’s not hard to imagine a bunch of pitchers and teams hurrying to get something done. That tends to be how these clusters work, and if the Cubs have a strong order of preference among Michael King or Zac Gallen or Ranger Suarez or Tatsuya Imai or a Marlins trade or a MacKenzie Gore trade, and so on and so forth, they might have to leap this week. Yes, waiting might get you a little extra leverage and save you some month later in the month or in January, but it also might cost you the pitcher you really wanted.
All of this is true, more or less, within the relief market (which has already seen a cluster of moves happen) and the positional market (which really hasn’t moved yet at all). The Cubs can make an impact in those areas, too, and I’m sure we’ll see movement this week. I just feel like the potential for impact on the 2026 Cubs roster is a little greater in the rotation, realistically speaking.
