26-year-old Maxime Grousset of France powered his way to men’s 100m butterfly gold tonight in Lublin, Poland, knocking down both the meet record and national record on his way to the top of the podium.

Grousset stopped the clock at a head-turning effort of 48.10, getting the edge over Switzerland’s Noe Ponti by just .01.

Ponti is both the reigning European Short Course Championships and Short Course World Championships gold medalist, so this was quite the confidence boost for long course world champion Grousset.

The pair represented the only racers to delve under the 49-second barrier in tonight’s contest, with Italy’s Michele Busa rounding out the top tier with 49.21 for bronze.

Grousset split 22.32/25.78 to get to the wall first. That erased Ponti’s former meet mark of 48.47 put up at this competition two years ago. It also overtook Grousset’s own French standard of 48.57 established as the silver medalist in Budapest last year. Splits for that former feat included 22.56/26.01, showing how the veteran was quicker on both ends of the race this time around.

With tonight’s performance, Grousset checks in as the 5th-best men’s SCM 100 butterfly performer in history.

Grousset’s resume keeps growing virtually every time the man dives in. He has four European Long Course Championshps medals and now seven European Short Course Championships medals, including 50m fly bronze from earlier in this competition.

Tack on his 10 long course World Championships medals and his 4x100m medley relay bronze from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and Grousset is one of the most successful French swimmers in recent history.

Tonight has been full of very close races, but none have been as close as the men’s 100 fly final where France’s Maxime Grousset came out on top of the field, touching in 48.10 to beat Switzerland’s Noe Ponti by just one hundredth of a second.

Grousset and Ponti traded off the lead throughout the race. Grousset led for the first 50, turning a tenth ahead of Ponti at 22.32 to 22.42.

On the 3rd 25, Ponti ook over the lead after splitting 12.62 to Grousset’s 12.74 to turn just two hundredths ahead going in to the final 25.

Grousset ultimately prevailed, splitting 13.04 on the final 25, which was exactly what he needed in order to stand alone atop the podium. Ponti swam 13.07 to finish 2nd in 48.11.

Grousset’s swim was a new French Record time, taking down his own standard of 48.57 from last year’s SC World Championships.

Italy finished 3rd and 4th with Michael Busa touching 3rd in 49.21 and Simone Stefani finishing 4th at 49.35
