Marti stopped the clock at a super speedy result of 2:00.86 to top the podium, with Corbeau settling for silver less than half a second back in 2:01.27.
Austria’s Luka Mladenovic collected his second bronze, touching in 2:02.48 for 3rd place this evening.
As for Marti, the reigning world champion in this event, downed the former Spanish national record en route to gold. That previous benchmark stood at the 2:01.55 he put up for gold last year in Budapest. That means he hacked well over half a second to elevate himself to an entirely new level with tonight’s gold.
Comparing his two performances, the Virginia Tech Hokie made the biggest difference on the back half of the race.
Marti’s New Spanish Record – 2:00.86 Marti’s Old Spanish Record – 2:01.55 27.03 27.17 30.69 30.89 31.20 31.59 31.64 31.90But Marti wasn’t the only one to establish a new national record in tonight’s rapid affair.
Mladenovic’s outing of 2:02.48 also set a new Austrian standard, handily overtaking the previous record of 2:03.42 he had established during last night’s semi-finals by nearly a second. Before this competition, the national record stood at the 2:04.34 Christopher Rothbauer put on the books during the 2020 International Swimming League (ISL) season.
Mladenovic is the 2022 World Junior Championships gold medalist in the 100m breast and runner-up in this longer distance.
Additionally, Darius-Stefan Coman of Romania lowered his own national record from the semi-finals. Last night he punched an NR of 2:03.85 to obliterate his former record of 2:06.19 logged at last year’s Short Course World Championships.
Flash forward to tonight and Coman lowered it even further, rocking 2:03.17 to place 5th overall.
Finally, we reported how 18-year-old Filip Nowacki established a new European Junior Record of 2:02.96 as he finished in 4th place in this evening’s thrilling battle.
