For the first time in years, Bears-Packers feels like Bears-Packers again.
Not obligatory. Not ceremonial. Not nostalgic in a sad way. It feels real. It feels heavy. It feels like something is actually at stake.
The Bears arrive at Week 14 with a 9–3 record and the No. 1 seed in the NFC, the kind of December positioning that hasn’t existed in the lifetime of half the roster. The Packers aren’t far behind at 8–3-1, making Sunday’s matchup at Lambeau the closest the two teams have been in the standings this late in the season in over a decade.
And into all of this walks Caleb Williams — already 1-0 at Lambeau Field, and a blocked Cairo Santos field goal attempt away from being undefeated against the Packers. Chicago has spent decades watching Green Bay build its mythology on the back of its quarterbacks. On Sunday, Caleb Williams gets his next chance to become the kind of Packers slayer the Bears have only ever seen from afar.

Mandatory Credit: Daniel Bartel-Imagn ImagesWilliams didn’t pretend last year’s win in Green Bay was just another game. He spoke about it this week the way veteran Bears speak about the few times they’ve won there — with a mix of clarity, relief, and a pinch of disbelief.
“It was awesome,” Williams said of that Week 18 win. “This rivalry, that’s been going on for a hundred years or so… being able to go out there and defeat them, it was important for us.”
That experience matters. The Bears hadn’t won at Lambeau in years. They hadn’t beaten the Packers in anything resembling a statement game in even longer. And despite everything that swirled around last season’s finale — the chaos, the noise, the blocked field goal — Williams came away from those moments sharper, not shaken. He enters this week with the benefit of perspective. He knows what happened last year wasn’t a fluke. He also learned quickly what Bears-Packers represents. The history. The long streaks. The years of one-sided heartbreak. And the emotional gravity that comes with stepping into the middle of it.
“They’re always fun,” he said. “They always come down to the final minutes. Being able to control our emotions throughout the whole game is what we’re going to focus on.”
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams (18) throws the ball against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. Tork Mason/USA TODAY NETWORK-WisconsinThe Packers have built one of the league’s best defenses, but hidden inside that structure is a soft spot Caleb Williams is uniquely positioned to exploit: the quick passing game.
According to Next Gen Stats, Williams completed 27 of 31 throws under 2.5 seconds in two meetings with Green Bay last season — an absurd 87.1 percent completion rate. Those numbers aren’t empty calories. Green Bay ranks in the bottom third of the NFL in EPA per play against quick-game passes.
If Chicago can stay on schedule, Williams will have opportunities to pick at the Packers underneath, stress their safeties, and force Green Bay to consider adjusting a structure that doesn’t like to adjust. Meanwhile, the Packers defense bends in the quick game. But lately it is breaking against the run in recent weeks. Over the last three contests, the Packers have allowed 118 rushing yards per game, and opponents have run the ball on 5 percent of all snaps and 46 percent of first downs during that span.
Teams aren’t just running on them — they’re choosing to run on them.
Chicago, fresh off bulldozing Philadelphia with a punishing, multi-back rushing approach, is built to lean directly into this weakness. A strong ground game at Lambeau does more than move the chains; it protects Williams from exotic pressures, quiets the stadium, and forces the Packers to play a style of game they’d rather not.
Ben Johnson has emphasized physicality all season. This week, physicality might be the storyline.

Mandatory Credit: Daniel Bartel-Imagn ImagesThis isn’t the Aaron Rodgers era anymore, where the rivalry felt like a history lesson more than a competition. Instead, this is two winning teams, two top-tier defenses, two young quarterbacks trending upward, and a December stage that actually feels like something worth circling on the NFL calendar again.
Packers Week used to be a reminder of what the Bears weren’t. This week, it’s a chance for the Bears to show exactly who they are. Chicago can remain atop the NFC, stay in control of the division, and put distance between themselves and their oldest, most frustrating rival. The Bears can walk out of Lambeau with a 10-3 record — and position themselves for a sweep of their toughest remaining games still on the table.
As for Caleb Williams, he can become something Bears fans haven’t seen in generations — a quarterback who walks into Lambeau Field and walks out with the stadium quiet behind him.
Again.
If he does, this rivalry will feel officially reborn. And for the first time in a very long time, the Bears might finally have the quarterback holding the pen.

The Green Bay Packers beat the Washington Commanders 27-18Three Bears
Every week, our Chicago Bears writers will give you their Bears player to watch in the matchup ahead. Three Bears is a staple of these previews, and with Bears coverage expanding this season, I thought it would be cool to involve all of the Bears thinkers in the exercise.
Patrick Flowers: D’Andre Swift & Kyle Monangai — Okay, so that’s going to make four Bears, but who cares. (Luis: I care. You’re kiling me, Smalls) Green Bay’s defense has been outstanding. However there is an opportunity for Ben Johnson to replicate his Eagles game plan in Green Bay this weekend. The Packers have allowed 118 rushing yards per game over their last three games, mainly because teams have been testing them more. Opponents have run the ball on nearly 51 percent of their snaps and 46 percent of their first down snaps (h/t Ryan Heckman). Chicago bullied Philly last week on the ground, and that could be the key to a victory at Lambeau this week.
Luis Medina: DJ Moore — The Bears’ 2025 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee could be in line for an uptick in target share depending on the health of fellow wide receiver Rome Odunze. Even if Odunze is healthy, I’m curious to see how Moore plays down the stretch. This is the first time he has played on a team that will finish a given season with a winning record. Proving he is a winning player by contributing to a win against the Packers would be delightful.
Matt Rooney: Caleb Williams — Two weeks in a row that I’m picking him, and while I don’t necessarily like repeating my choices, this one felt necessary. He is 1-0 in Lambeau. It should be 2-0 against the Packers if the Bears don’t have a field goal blocked in last year’s meeting at Soldier Field. Williams has a chance to be the Packers slayer we’ve been hoping to have for, well, as long as I’ve been alive. Go on the road, pick up the biggest win of the season, and be to Packers fans what Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre were to us for so long.
