Fans of The Mavericks are rallying around frontman Raul Malo after he was rushed to the hospital Thursday, just one day before a major tribute show meant to honor his 35-year career.
His wife, Betty, shared the news on Facebook, explaining that an unexpected medical emergency required urgent care. “Our love is fighting hard right now but not a second goes by that he doesn’t appreciate all the love everyone shows him,” she wrote.
“The boys and I had to bring him to the ER earlier today but (Raul Malo) is stable and ready to fight. We are all excited for (The Ryman) shows and hope everyone enjoys them! Raul has changed many lives and his music has brought so much love to so many people. Let’s all stand with him and rally!!!”
The tribute shows at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, scheduled for Dec. 5 and 6, will celebrate Malo’s decades-long musical career. It seems the family hopes to attend despite the sudden turn of events.
Fans have flooded social media with messages of love and support. “Stay strong and carry the fight El Maestro,” one fan wrote, while another shared, “Praying and sending all of the positive vibes your way.” A third added, “We are fighting with you with everything we have!”
Malo revealed his cancer diagnosis in June 2024 and underwent liver tumor surgery and chemotherapy soon after. By September, he shared that the cancer had progressed to Leptomeningeal Disease (LMD), a rare condition affecting the membranes around the brain and spinal cord.
Due to his ongoing health challenges, The Mavericks announced they would be canceling all remaining concerts for the year. “I want to update you all on my health, as things have taken a turn,” Malo wrote to his followers on Instagram.
Although the band had continued touring since his original diagnosis, they confirmed that all 2025 shows would be shelved — with one exception: the tribute shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.
