But the country superstar, now 64, wasn’t actually the first artist to record the song.
The beloved 1990 hit, released 36 years ago today, was written by Nashville songwriters Earl Bud Lee and Dewayne Blackwell, who eventually brought it to Brooks when he was still a relatively unknown musician. At the time, Brooks had just signed with Capitol Records and was preparing to release his debut album.
He agreed to sing a demo of "Friends in Low Places," and apparently liked the song enough to ask the writers if he could hold onto it for his second album.

Brooks later recalled that the demo was the last session he ever did as a singer before his career took off. Lee and Blackwell agreed to save it for him.

David Wayne Chamberlain recorded and released a version in 1989, before Brooks’ recording became a hit. Mark Chesnutt also recorded the song around the same period, with his version appearing on his 1990 album Too Cold at Home.
Then Brooks got his chance.
He recorded "Friends in Low Places" for his second studio album, No Fences, and the song became the album’s first single. Released in August 1990, it spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard country chart and went on to become one of Brooks’ signature songs.
The song’s success helped make No Fences a major moment in Brooks’ career, but its journey to becoming a country staple had already taken a few unexpected turns.
It may be hard to imagine anyone else singing "Friends in Low Places" now. But before it became a country classic, the song had already belonged to other voices, and Brooks himself first encountered it as a demo singer who was still waiting for his own big break.
