Luka Mladenovic lowered the Austrian Record in the 100 breast by nearly four-tenths of a second, as he stormed home to win bronze on the touch over Simone Cerasuolo, the 50 breast World Champion.
Mladenovic had the fastest final 25 in the field, rising from 7th at the last turn to take bronze. He was one of only two men, along with Emre Sakci, to keep all four lengths under 15 seconds.
That followed on from his strong finish in the semi-finals, where he had the third-fastest closing 50 in 30.06. His second half tonight was even faster at 29.67, fastest in the field.
Comapred to his swim last night, the difference all came in the second half. He was two-tenths faster on both 25s than he was in the semi-finals.

He had the fastest breaststroke split in the field at 15.14, matching Berke Saka and Robert Pedersen (Maxime Grousset officially split 14.67, but he didn’t look to have triggered the timing pad with his hand on the backstroke turn, so in reality this was slower).
Mladenovic then had the second-fastest freestyle split in 12.86, only behind Noe Ponti, so could be a threat on the back half in the final tomorrow.
The Michigan freshman has had a fantastic year, sweeping the breaststroke events at the European U23 Championships this summer and breaking the 1:00 barrier in the long course 100. He has gone from strength to strength in yards in Ann Arbor, and is the 4th-fastest swimmer in the NCAA this season in the 100 yard breast.
As well as the 100 IM final tomorrow, Mladenovic will compete in the 50 breast this week. He is the 22nd seed there, but you would not bet against him making a splash again.
