Each offseason, we see these kinds of stories percolate: a big-name free agent is available, his hometown team has a need in his area, and maybe they will have surprising interest. I don’t even think it’s merely cynical, as it’s probably pretty typical for free agents to at least want to feel out whether their hometown team will have interest. So there are probably dialogues most of the time, and since it serves the agent’s interest to let that info out, it gets out.
I kinda figured that was the deal with Kyle Schwarber and the Cincinnati Reds earlier this offseason. Schwarber’s monster bat would like mighty good in a Reds lineup that is in pretty dire need for an impactful DH, and he hails from the Cincinnati area originally. So why wouldn’t there at least be some chats, right? But it felt a stretch to think it would actually go anywhere, given the price tag Schwarber is expected to command. The Reds have not signed a nine-figure deal in over a decade, and they haven’t signed a free agent to such a deal in a QUARTER CENTURY!
… of course, that one was Ken Griffey Jr., who was from Cincinnati, so maybe that’s the mold.
Anyway, there’s a write-up today at The Athletic from Ken Rosenthal that takes the possibility of the Reds pursuing Kyle Schwarber quite seriously. In fact, that’s the literally first sentence of the article, The Reds are serious about signing Schwarber.
But the rest of the section on Schwarber is mostly about how, if he approaches $150 million – as he very well might – the Reds probably aren’t going to be able to go to that level. Indeed, a number of other possible suitors, the Phillies chief among them, are almost certainly going to make a higher offer than whatever the Reds can put together. So it would be a question of Schwarber taking something of a hometown discount to sign, and it’s pretty hard for me to see him doing that to leave the Phillies in favor of the Reds.
Jon Heyman added what he’s hearing:
Reds are indeed interested in hometown hero Kyle Schwarber. Would be quite a coup if they could pull it off. Red Sox, Orioles, Pirates and others, including of course incumbent Phillies all in. 56 HR (including 23 vs. LHP obviously plays). @Ken_Rosenthal 1st linked Cincy
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) December 3, 2025To me, the whole situation kind of reads like a bit of a nudge from Schwarber’s camp to the Phillies, trying to let them know that the mutuality of interest with the Reds is very serious … but the Phillies can keep him if they just pay up.
I still wouldn’t bet on the Reds ultimately signing Schwarber, whose market probably isn’t going to fall off like Nick Castellanos’s did back when the Reds got him before the 2020 season. That’s what it would take for a deal to come together, I suspect. (Funny that those two were teammates with the Cubs and then the Phillies, and now you have these Schwarber rumors involving the Reds.)
The story is worth following closely, though, because of the obvious and substantial potential near-term impact on the NL Central.
