John Legend Had to Get Permission From an Adult Video Producer to Use His Stage Name

John Legendmay have claimed his stage name early in his career but he had to jump through some hoops in order to secure his moniker!

Looking back on his debut as an artist, the "All of Me" hitmaker says he was originally planning on going by his given name, John Roger Stephens, but when he began working with a young Kanye West, he earned his iconic nickname.

At the time, Legend was working on West's debut album The College Dropout when the pair began collaborating with a spoken-word artist named J. Ivy, who ended up being the first to call him "Legend."

"Now J. heard me singing, playing and doing all I was doing on those College Dropout tracks, and he was impressed," Legend recalled on an episode of Word+Music, per PEOPLE. "He said, 'Man, we're gonna have to call you the legend.'"

The crew immediately picked up on the nickname — which Legend felt was fitting because he was an "old soul" with a "throwback voice" and "throwback style." While Legend spent some time debating whether or not he could publicly assume that kind of stage name without having any success yet, he ultimately decided to go with it.

The trouble arose when Legend's lawyer informed him that he had to trademark the name...and there was someone else using a very similar moniker.

"Lo and behold, there's a porn producer—I kid you not—a porn producer who dabbled in rockabilly music, and he went by the name Johnny Legend," he revealed. "The fact that he made music, rockabilly music, and his name was Johnny Legend, meant that there was a possible trademark infringement case."

Legend and his team had to reach out to the adult video producer and "negotiate with him" to "cut a mutually exclusive deal" clarifying that they were different people.

"He wouldn't sue me. I wouldn't sue him. He wouldn't try to get into the soul music business pretending to be John Legend. And I'm happy to make clear that I kept my side of the agreement. I didn't produce any porn, didn't make any rockabilly music pretending to be Johnny Legend," he concluded.

Safe to say, there's been no confusion between John Legend and Johnny Legend since then!
