The clock is ticking faster (at least it feels that way) as the Valley anticipates the 2025 Territorial Cup on Black Friday.
Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham said his team already competes with an “edge,” but one of the oldest rivalries in college football will have everyone involved playing “right on the boiling point.”
“We got to be aware of that because the emotions of this game. But I want our guys to play with an elite level of passion,” Dillingham told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta on Wednesday. “And to me, passion is not emotion, right? An emotion is an emotional response to something that’s negative.
“A passion means you have a purpose behind why you’re doing that emotion. … It’s a controlled passion.”
The game, which hasn’t matched up a ranked ASU and Arizona since 2014, will feature the No. 20 Sun Devils and No. 25 Wildcats after the latest College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday.

With both teams at 8-3 and nationally ranked, it’s just as Dillingham said on X Sunday he wanted it to be for “many more years” to come.
And, as a Sun Devil product himself, the coach has a very personal connection to the Territorial Cup and all that comes with it. So much so, Dillingham said Monday that Thanksgiving leftovers and the game go hand-in-hand.
ASU enters Friday night at Mountain America Stadium on a three-game winning streak and Arizona has won four straight. But as far as Dillingham is concerned, the regular season is over and a new one is about to begin.
“But teams have had great seasons and the seasons are over,” Dillingham said. “This is a one-game separate season.”
Since the two programs joined the Pac-10 in 1978, the head-to-head series is an exact tie at 23-23-1.
This rendition carries additional weight besides being the tiebreaker, as ASU still has hopes alive to return to the Big 12 Conference title game, though its odds to get back are slim.
Jordyn Tyson and Territorial Cup
ASU star wide receiver Jordyn Tyson was listed as “probable” for the boiling rivalry game in the initial Big 12 availability report.
His return to play last week at Colorado after missing three games with a hamstring injury has spoken volumes about Tyson’s growth as a player and young man, according to Dillingham.

“He’s matured as a human, as a young man, beyond what I could have ever imagined somebody could have grown,” Dillingham said. “He’s a freak talent, we all know that. But the behind the scenes of him is somebody you want your daughter to marry. He’s that type of person.
“I’m just fired up to see him play. He wants to play for his teammates.”
It will be extra special for Tyson, who was forced to exit last year’s Territorial Cup game with a collarbone injury that also cost him the Sun Devils’ magical run to the CFP.
The 2025 Territorial Cup between ASU and Arizona kicks off from Mountain America Stadium at 7 p.m. MST on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app. Watch the game on FOX.
