25th Summer Deaflympics (Swimming)

Thursday, November 20– Tuesday, November 25, 2025 Tokyo Aquatics Center, Tokyo, Japan LCM (50 meters) Results Day 1 Recap | Day 2 Recap | Day 3 Recap | Day 4 Recap

Italian Olympian Viola Scotto di Carlo has looked up the podium a lot at Team USA’s Carli Cronk at this year’s Deaflympics, but on Monday she burst through with a pair of gold medals – including flipping the script on her American rival.

She started the session with a win and new World Record in the 50 free in 25.28. While not a best time (24.84 from the World University Games), the swim broke the officially-recognized Deaf Swimming World Record of 26.15 set at the 2009 Deaflympics by Ukraine’s Ganna Lytvynenko.

Scotto di Carlo then won the 50 fly in 26.49, breaking another World Record, and avenging the earlier loss in her best event, the 100 fly. That swim broke Olga Kluchnikova’s 2019 World Record of 27.48. She previously broke that record with a 27.19 in prelims, and both she and the runner-up Cronk (27.10) were under the old record in finals. Another American, Brooke Thompson, finished 3rd in 28.95.

Along with a bronze in the session-closing mixed 400 free relay, Scotto di Carlo now has 10 medals at the meet: 5 golds, 3 silvers, 2 bronze.

While Scotto di Carlo was able to snag the individual win, Cronk got the last shot of the day when she anchored the American 400 free relay to a win in 3:39.66 – another new World Record. That relay included Marcus Titus (52.92), Brooke Thompson (58.97), Matthew Klotz (52.85), and Cronk (54.92). Ukraine took 2nd, including a 50.83 anchor from Denys Nakonechnyi, and Scotto Di Carlo split 56.98 as her team finished 3rd.

Other Day 5 Winners and Notables:

Aksana Petrushenka of the Neutral Athletes team, one of the oldest competitors in the field at 41 years old, won the women’s 200 breaststroke in 2:39.27. Petrushenka is a long-time competitor at deaf swimming competitions. She had a big final 50 going from a .32 second deficit to a .56 margin of victory over Australia’s Imogen Nolan in the last 50 meters. The Neutral Athletes team won another event when Stepan Skosyrskii won the 100 fly in 55.59, beating out Japanese star Ryutaro Ibara (55.92). American Collin Davis took bronze in 56.67 with a fast closing 50. Davis swims collegiately at Wyoming. Britain’s Charlotte Gower won the 100 backstroke in 1:04.19 as one of the younger competitors in the field at only 16. She beat out Hungarian 15-year-old Tamar Boros (1:07.82) by almost four seconds for the win. Katy Wun from Great Britain added a win in the 800 free (9:13.75) to her earlier win in the 1500 free (17:36.35).
