Prep football roundup: Windsor dominates Pueblo South in second round

A week after completely shutting down Severance in the first round of the playoffs, top-seeded Windsor flexed its offensive muscles in a 56-14 second-round home win against No. 9 Pueblo South on Saturday.

The unbeaten Wizards (12-0) emphatically punched their ticket to the Class 3A football semifinals and will face fifth-seeded Holy Family (11-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday at H.J. Dudley Field.

    The Tigers advanced with a tight 34-26 road win against No. 4 Mead (9-3) on Saturday.

    Windsor was tied at 7 against Pueblo South (9-3) after one quarter in its second-round game Saturday. The Wizards quickly took control, scoring 21 points in the second quarter to lead 28-14 at halftime.

    Windsor proceeded to outscore the Colts 28-0 in the second half.

    The Wizards again had dual 100-plus-yard rushers as part of an attack that produced 397 yards on the ground. Senior Adrian Czyszczon had 187 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries. Senior quarterback Mason Moore added 120 yards on 15 carries.

    Moore also threw two touchdown passes, completing 3 of 4 passes for 61 yards.

    Roosevelt falls just short

    After a dominant win in the first round against No. 11 Pueblo County two weeks ago, sixth-seeded Roosevelt found itself in a much tighter affair in the second round Saturday against third-seeded Palisade.

    The Bulldogs stayed just a half-step ahead of the Rough Riders for most of the game, topping Roosevelt 21-14 in Palisade.

    Roosevelt ended its season with an 8-4 record.

    The Bulldogs (10-2) advanced to take on second-seeded Pomona (11-1) at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Arvada.

    In the second-round matchup this past Saturday, Palisade led 7-0 after one quarter and maintained a 13-7 lead through the second and third quarters.

    Roosevelt took a 14-13 lead on senior Jasiah Ramirez’s 23-yard touchdown pass to junior Noah Lucero early in the fourth quarter. But, the Bulldogs struck back just a couple minutes later.

    Senior quarterback Dylon Larson connected on a 79-yard touchdown to junior Aidan Shiao. Senior Branson Springer connected with senior Nathan Umberger on a 2-point conversion pass to give Palisade the narrow lead for good.

    The Rough Riders had a chance to retake the lead with about 5 minutes left but turned the ball over on downs on the Bulldogs’ 10-yard line.

    Despite the loss, Roosevelt narrowly won the yardage battle, 322-314.

    Senior Milo Pascual had 107 rushing yards on 19 carries. Lucero caught five passes for 105 yards and both of the Rough Riders’ touchdowns.

    Eaton struggles late in semis

    For the third consecutive year, Eaton saw its playoff run come to an end one win shy of the championship game.

    The ninth-seeded Reds dropped a 35-13 semifinals game on the road to fourth-seeded Elizabeth on Saturday.

    Eaton ended another impressive season with an 8-4 record.

    The Cardinals (10-2) move on to face second-seeded Wellington (12-0) in the championship at 5 p.m. Saturday at CSU Pueblo.

    The Reds are Elizabeth were tied at zero through one quarter and at 7 through two quarters.

    The Cardinals edged ahead, 13-7, through three quarters before outscoring Eaton 22-6 in the fourth.

    The Reds trailed just 21-13 nearly midway through the fourth quarter, but Elizabeth took over with big plays late.

    Eaton junior quarterback Brayden Legler connected on 16 of 25 passes for 160 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

    Junior Jackson Savona carried the ball 16 times for 79 yards. Senior Max Blaskowski caught five passes for 87 yards and a touchdown.
