Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 7, Cardinals 3 – July 27, 2026

The Cubs kept the good vibes rolling on Monday night, beating the Cardinals 7-3 at Busch Stadium. As Michael pointed out earlier, a LOT of National League teams lost tonight, making this win that much more important with the deadline nearing.

David Peterson logged yet another solid start in a Cubs uniform, with the southpaw allowing two or fewer runs in four of his five starts since coming over from the Mets. His one bad start was, coincidentally, against the Cardinals, when he gave up 10 runs in 3.2 innings just three weeks ago. Tonight, Peterson allowed two runs across 5.2 innings, keeping the Cardinals at bay and leaving the game with a four-run lead.

The Cubs offense chased Cardinals starting pitcher Matthew Liberatore after just 3.2 innings, scoring three runs on eight hits and two walks. Alex Bregman got things started in the first inning with an RBI double, later hitting a solo home run to extend the lead.

It was a four-hit game for Bregman. I guess the day off was good to him.

Also with four hits tonight? Nico Hoerner, who continued his torrid stretch since the All-Star Break with four knocks, including a two-run home run (his first since April 21), and four RBI. Hoerner has a .355 AVG across his last seven games, finally getting back on track after an unlucky first half of the season.

Although it won’t show up on the box score, Ian Happ may have saved the game with his incredible defense. He robbed Jordan Walker of an RBI extra-base hit in the seventh inning before throwing out Iván Herrera at second base 10 minutes later.

I can’t discuss tonight’s win without bringing up Jacob Webb, who closed out the game with a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning, continuing his excellent campaign after a somewhat rocky start to the season. The 32-year-old hasn’t given up a run since June 20!

The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game is Alex Bregman, who recorded his first four-hit game of the season tonight at Busch Stadium. Bregman has an .814 OPS over his last 15 games.
