Another Team You Have to Beat, Paint Problems, A Big Opportunity Ahead, and Other Bulls Bullets

If the Chicago Bulls are thankful for anything this week, it will be a three-day break.

They will finally have some time to breathe following their quick trip to New Orleans tonight. After playing their sixth game in nine days, they can sit in an ice bath until Friday night’s final NBA Cup game against the Charlotte Hornets.

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) November 24, 2025 In theory, there should be very little concern about tonight’s matchup with the Pelicans. Few teams have been worse this season on both sides of the ball. New Orleans has the 28th-ranked offense and the 27th-ranked defense. Their -12.8 point differential lands ahead of only the Wizards and Pacers, while their 2-15 record overall is only better than the 1-15 Wizards. They will come into tonight on a nine-game losing streak, dropping their last meeting against the Atlanta Hawks 115-98. On paper, this is the kind of game that you expect a 9-7 team to win relatively easily. But the Bulls aren’t your standard 9-7 team, folks! The Bulls were seconds away from becoming the Wizards’ second win of the season this past week. They also needed a buzzer-beating triple from Nikola Vucevic to take down the heavily depleted Portland Trail Blazers. Oh, and need I remind anyone of Friday’s beatdown against Miami? The Bulls may be an above. 500 team, but they sure haven’t played like it in quite some time. If they need to erase a double-digit deficit against the Wizards at home, you bet they can lose to this Pelicans team on the road. Rookie Derik Queen has started to feast over the last three games against some legitimately solid frontcourt competition. He has scored at least 20 points in each contest, which included a 30-point showing against Nikola Jokic. Queen also recorded a near triple-double against Dallas, registering 20 points, 11 assists, and 7 rebounds. The strength and versatility that made him stand out at Maryland have started to shine through at the NBA level. And this sure feels concerning for a Bulls defense that Nikola Vucevic just called “soft.” Indeed, the Bulls are giving up the third-most points in the paint per game (55.4), and guess which team shoots the highest percentage of their shots at the rim? I know … yikes! Zion Williamson is also expected to play tonight after sitting out the backend of the back-to-back against Atlanta. He continues to be a force when healthy, shooting 51.0 percent from the field and averaging 10.3 free throw attempts per game. Again, for a Bulls team that has struggled to bring the necessary physicality and defensive focus over the last handful of games, this projects to be a much harder matchup than it should be. Now, the good news is that the Pelicans can really struggle in transition. They allow 17.5 fastbreak points per game and operate with a PACE that lands in the league’s bottom 10. There is a world here where the Bulls can simply take over this game with their tempo and open-floor athleticism. New Orleans misses A LOT of shots, so the Bulls need to come in with the same kind of grab-and-go mentality that worked so well during their 6-1 stretch. If the Bulls can get past tonight’s game and move to 10-7, they will have a very good chance to stack some wins. The Hornets, Pacers, Magic, Nets, and Pacers again make up their next five games. The combined record of those teams is 14-48. Charlotte, Brooklyn, and Indiana sit 12-14 in the conference, respectively. This young group can make everyone feel a whole lot better about these recent close and ugly wins if they can show it was a valuable teaching lesson. This is the kind of stretch where good teams take care of business. Six years ago today, the future All-Star gave Jim Boylen a metaphorical middle finger by dropping 49 points and draining a historic 13 threes. The former head coach benched LaVine the game before. Also, yes, I recognize that it’s pretty sad that this random regular-season game in Charlotte was one of LaVine’s most memorable moments in Chicago … but it was still awesome!

    — Ballislife.com (@Ballislife) November 23, 2025 For the Bulls to feel better about their playoff chances in the East, they’re going to need some teams to fall down the totem pole. For what it’s worth, I’m not sure one of those teams will be Miami. Shockingly off to an 11-6 start, the Heat are about to welcome back their best pure scorer. Tyler Herro has been given the green light to return tonight against the Mavericks, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. He underwent ankle surgery in September. The Bulls do not play Miami again until the second week of January.
