Around the NFL: Shedeur Sanders First Start, QB Injury Updates, More

The Cleveland Browns will turn to rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders on Sunday in Las Vegas, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced Wednesday, marking yet another shift under center for a franchise all too familiar with QB turnover. Sanders becomes the 42nd different quarterback to start for the Browns since 1999 and the third different starter this season.

Browns Turn to Rookie QB Shedeur Sanders

Sanders entered last week’s loss to the Ravens in relief after fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel suffered a concussion late in the second quarter. Gabriel remains in the league’s concussion protocol with no clear timetable for return. Sanders showed flashes early, completing his first two passes, but the afternoon quickly became difficult; he finished 4-of-16 for 47 yards with an interception while facing heavy pressure from a blitz-happy Ravens defense.

Complicating matters, Sanders had never taken a single rep with the first-team offense—either in practice or preseason—before being thrust into action. Stefanski said the rookie will get every first-team rep this week as he and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees craft a game plan better suited to Sanders’ strengths. Sanders said he’s eager for the chance to build timing and rhythm, calling himself a “feel” player who needs to experience the operation firsthand.

Stefanski praised Sanders’ growth throughout the season in scout-team work and post-practice sessions but declined to speculate on how a strong performance might influence the position’s long-term outlook. Bailey Zappe, on the practice squad since late August, will serve as the No. 2 quarterback; he still has two standard elevations remaining.

QB Injury Updates: Aaron Rodgers, Michael Penix Jr., Jaxson Dart, C.J. Stroud

Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart took an encouraging step Wednesday, returning to practice in a non-contact capacity as he works through the concussion protocol. Dart has already missed one start after exiting the team’s Week 10 loss to the Bears, marking the fourth time in four months he’s been evaluated for a concussion dating back to the preseason. This, however, is his first confirmed NFL concussion. If he clears all phases, he’s expected to start Sunday against the Lions.

In Atlanta, the news is far more grim. Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will undergo season-ending surgery after suffering a partially torn ACL in his left knee during Sunday’s loss to the Panthers. It continues a long history of knee issues for Penix, who suffered two ACL tears in college and missed a game earlier this season with a bone bruise. Head coach Raheem Morris said there’s no guarantee Penix will be ready for Week 1 of 2026, underscoring the severity of the setback.

Houston will once again be without C.J. Stroud on Thursday night against the Bills. Head coach DeMeco Ryans ruled him out on Tuesday, marking Stroud’s third consecutive missed game since his Week 9 concussion. Stroud returned to practice in a limited capacity, but the short week eliminated any realistic shot at clearance. Backup Davis Mills will make his third straight start after leading Houston to wins over Jacksonville and Tennessee, throwing for 566 yards and three touchdowns across those games.

In Pittsburgh, the Steelers are preparing as though they might not have Aaron Rodgers available for Sunday’s matchup in Chicago. Rodgers fractured his left wrist in last week’s win over the Bengals, though head coach Mike Tomlin said the injury will not require surgery. Whether he plays will depend on comfort, stability, and functionality as the week progresses.
