Josh Hutcherson and Ariana Grande go way back.
The two A-list celebrities were both guests on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night. Hutcherson was on to promote comedian Rachel Sennott's new HBO comedy series I Love LA, where he plays Dylan, the boyfriend of Maia (Sennott). Meanwhile, Grande was on the late-night talk show to talk about Wicked: For Good, the second and final installment of Jon M. Chu's Wicked remakes, and even sang multiple duets with Fallon.
After Grande's segments were over, Hutcherson was then interviewed by Fallon. In the very beginning of the discussion, after the actor and the host praised Grande, the Hunger Games star revealed that when he was 15 to 17 years old, he was friends with a lot of the Victorious cast, which was the Nickelodeon TV show where Grande got her breakthrough. Aired from 2010 to 2013, The series centered around Tori (Victoria Justice), who is navigating her life as a student at a performing arts high school, and finding her place among her talented and eccentric friends: Andre Harris (Leon Thomas III), Cat Valentine (Grande), Robbie Shapiro (Matt Bennett), Jade West (Elizabeth Gilles) and Beck Oliver (Avan Jogia). Grande was only 16 years old when the show premiered, and 19 when it concluded after four seasons.
"I met Ariana multiple times in that day and age, and she told me, 'You know, I'm a really good singer,' and 'I can do the Mariah Carey whistle sing,'" Hutcherson explained. After Grande proved to Hutcherson that she could reach the notes, he was shocked, and Grande told him that she was going to be a singer too. "Cut to now, Ariana Grande."
The 33-year-old actor also spoke about his days filming The Hunger Games movies with Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson and Liam Hemsworth, as well as how his character in I Love LA is loosely based on his personality in real life.
Since Victorious wrapped in February 2013 and Grande's brief stint in the show Sam & Cat, the now 32-year-old singer and actress released multiple successful studio albums, starting with her debut album Yours Truly in August 2013 and My Everything in 2014. She then released five more studio albums over the past 10 years, with her most recent being eternal sunshine in March 2024. To support her most recent record, Grande is set to go on a mini tour around the United States and London in 2026.
