When winter settles over their rural South Dakota farm, Chelsea and Cole DeBoer don't see it as something to endure, they see it as the beginning of their favorite season. "A lot of people complain about winter, but I love it!" Chelsea says. "When the snow is falling, the Christmas trees are up, and the fireplace is on — that feeling is everything." Cole feels the same. "If it's blizzarding outside at 4 p.m. and we're stuck inside for the evening? That's just fine."
It's that warm, snow-day-every-day feeling that inspires the couple's holiday decorating style. The Down Home Fab couple calls their aesthetic cowboy contemporary, a look that blends rustic Western touches with soft textures, layered lighting and a cabin-cozy ambiance.

A Living Room Made for Christmas Morning
The living room is the center of the DeBoer's home, something Chelsea planned long before the house was finished. "Even when we were building the house, I was imagining where the Christmas trees would go," she says. Today, two full-size trees stand side-by-side, creating a focal point that feels both dramatic and homey.
"It has to be the most magical room," Cole says. "It's where everyone meets on Christmas morning." The couple's cowboy-contemporary style comes through in the details: textured stockings, rustic ornaments, pine cones tucked into bowls and garlands and even a cowhide rug used as a tree skirt. Instead of a star on top, the trees in the DeBoer's living room are topped with a cowboy hat. "There's no longer a star at the top of our Christmas tree," Cole says. "It's a cowboy hat this year."

What Cowboy-Contemporary Looks Like for the Holidays
While Chelsea loves decor, she leans toward warmth over clutter. "I'm not a minimalist, but I don't want it to feel like Christmas threw up everywhere," she says. "I want it cozy, not overwhelming."
That means the house is filled with rustic materials like cowhide, wood, pinecones and weathered metals, mixed with soft, cabin-inspired elements like chunky knits, warm lighting and neutral garlands. Western touches show up everywhere from the cow-print stockings to the cowboy hat tree topper and Chelsea adds small accent trees throughout the home to create cozy moments in unexpected places.
She's also staunchly loyal to pre-lit trees. "I will never wrap a tree with lights again," she says. "It's pre-lit or nothing for us."
And despite loving the season, their rural location means that exterior lights rarely make an appearance. "We live in the middle of nowhere," Chelsea says. "Only our friends and delivery drivers see outdoor lights. Cole has considered installing permanent color-changing lights instead. "One of these years, I'll put them up and be done," he says.

With four kids, decorating is a lively — and occasionally chaotic — family effort. "The bottom half of our trees are covered in ornaments because the kids can't reach the top," Chelsea says. "We let them go wild and then once they go to bed, I make it how I want it."
Each child also gets a mini tree to decorate however they choose. Last year, their son Watson crafted an ornament out of a paper bowl and markers. "It was so creative and cute," Chelsea says. "They can make their trees however they want."
Their Most Meaningful Holiday Tradition
If there's one tradition the DeBoers wont give up, it's Christmas Eve at home. "It used to be chaotic — going to all the different families," Chelsea says. "Then one year we decided Christmas Eve would be just us. A nice meal, cookies for Santa — I look forward to it every year."
Cole feels the same. "I'm huge on Santa coming," he says. "I love to make it as magical as I can with gifts everywhere. And we always make a good breakfast. My mom always made cinnamon rolls growing up, so we try to keep that tradition going."
Their hope is that their kids remember the time together more than the gifts. "I want them to remember the quality time playing games, baking, and just being together" Cole says.
Christmas Memories That Stick With Them Most
Chelsea's favorite childhood memory was waking up on Christmas morning to cinnamon rolls and a warm breakfast. Cole remembers big family game nights on Christmas Eve. Now, as parents of four, they're building new versions of both traditions.
"The fact that the kids ask, 'Are we playing bingo tonight?' or talk about last year's traditions — that means everything," Chelsea says.

The DeBoer Christmas Vibe
From their twin trees to the cowboy hat topper, cowhide accents and cozy cabin lighting, the DeBoers holiday home blends warmth, whimsy, and Western charm. But the heart of it comes down to something simple: slowing down, staying close, and creating a place their kids will remember long after the decorations are packed away.
