Rochester souvenir shops report spike in Lake Ontario merchandise demand after Trump signs executive order renaming it Lake America

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Apple Maps officially changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. Google Maps made the change Sunday.

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow talked to local gift shop owners about the demand for Lake Ontario products. Businesses said Lake Ontario merchandise has been flying off the shelves since President Donald Trump signed the executive order to rename it Lake America.

Matt Saxon, owner of Lake Ontario Press, said he sold about 300 shirts Saturday. “We opened a half an hour early and we stayed open probably two hours late. We had an hour wait out the door all day long to print these. And the demand has been very high. So we’ll be doing it again this Saturday,” Saxon said.

Saxon said he hasn’t gotten any requests for Lake America shirts. Requests for Lake Ontario merchandise are coming from across the U.S. and Canada, which Saxon said comes from the pride people have in the lake.

“It’s always been Lake Ontario, you know? And I feel like it’s really not going to change regardless of what’s written on a piece of paper. I’ve had people reach out to me from Calgary to Florida now that have been really into this. So I think Lake Ontario is going to be just fine,” Saxon said.

Mike Pretty owns Pretty Apothecary in Rochester. He said he sold out of all his Lake Ontario hats, patches and even candles.

“The majority of the people have been coming in that I’ve been talking to are not pleased with the idea of changing the name. They don’t really want to see that happen. So I think the merch that they’re trying to get is that I’m holding on to that name and that feeling of what Lake Ontario means to them,” Pretty said.

Pretty said more Lake Ontario souvenirs are on the way and he’s not planning on ordering any Lake America products. Karen Mazurek, who owns Rochester Souvenir Shop, said when she came in today there was only one Lake Ontario shirt left.

Mazurek said she put in an order for more Lake Ontario merchandise as well as some for Lake America. “I think it’s important because it’s the history of what stood for before and the new and the coming future of Lake America,” Mazurek said.

The businesses said all the people coming in to buy Lake Ontario merchandise have also been helping their bottom line. They’re all planning to keep selling souvenirs saying Lake Ontario.
