Luke Littler: Let me chill out, I am only 18

My Sporting Life is The i Paper’s peek behind the curtain on what drives sports stars to greatness. And for the first in the series, we feature Luke Littler. He burst into the public consciousness two days after New Year’s Day in 2024 when he made it to the final of the darts World Championships at the age of just 16. The following year he sparked Littlermania when he lifted the trophy and the £500,000 prize at Alexandra Palace to become the youngest world champion in the sport’s history. He is credited with revitalising the game among young people, to the point where darts sets were a must-have item under the Christmas tree in 2024.

In 2025 alone he has won the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, UK Open and Masters to add to his world title and Premier League crown from the previous year. He is currently No 2 in the world. Here he tells us his journey – and the bumps along the way.

I was throwing real darts at three or four years old. I always played in the house. My dad was always playing, so I wanted to. When I was about one, one and a half, I went to a toy shop and picked up a magnetic dartboard. That’s where the story starts, playing on that every day.

I progressed on to a proper board just a bit lower than the normal height, then got to the normal height, normal length and just got better and better – I never stopped.

I think when I was three or four I was playing with proper darts. Health and safety would have a nightmare with that, especially these days.

Getting used to travelling has been tough. My tough moments have probably not been on the board, because us professionals are always going to have our bad days – we’re never going to be at the top of our game.

Over the past year, getting used to the travel has been a big thing. The Premier League is on a Thursday, then we would be up at four or five in the morning catching a flight to the likes of Germany or Belgium for the European Tour, stay there for the weekend, get back Monday, have Tuesday at home then travelling on a Wednesday for the next Premier League fixture, settling into the hotel. It just keeps going and going. But I have finally got used to the travel. It is part of the job.

Rituals? Not for me. I don’t do anything. I just get on with the darts and do my best. I am not saying things to myself like “you’ve got to do this on stage” or “you’ve got to do that on your walk-on”. I just get on with it.

Sometimes I wish people would leave me alone. My life has definitely changed. I am getting used to getting noticed and getting asked for pictures near enough everywhere we go. That’s all down to me for doing so well in my sport. I wish I could get left alone near enough every day. Let me chill out, I am only 18, I am trying to enjoy my teenage years.

I have learned to laugh at headlines about me. Some headlines you’ve seen in the past are just nonsense. When I missed registration for Wigan [a Players’ Championship event in October 2025, when he arrived late for the 11am registration] , it was “Luke Littler is barred and banned’”

I was not barred or banned, I just missed registration because there was a crash on the motorway and someone sadly lost their life. Being late was down to me not leaving enough time to get to my competition. But [in the past] everything was getting to me but now I just look at the headlines and just laugh at them. Because it is all nonsense.

I have (almost) no regrets. It has all gone pretty much – well, not as planned, because I have achieved far too much in a short space of time. But again, that is down to me doing so well. I suppose… in my first World Championship against Luke [Humphreys], I was on 112 – treble 18, treble 18 – and there was double two left. I asked what I had left three times. I missed, but if I had hit that I would have gone 5-2 up in the sets.

Then who knows, I could have won the World Championship on debut but it didn’t go to plan. But the next year I went back to win the trophy. It was just one of those things, it was not like me to mis-count. It was a learning curve and the next year I picked up the trophy.
