Post office in north suburbs shut down after roof collapses, with no timeline to reopen

A busy post office in the northern suburbs is shutdown with no timeline for reopening after the roof collapsed during a winter storm earlier this week that brought inches of heavy snow to the area.

According to a Facebook post from the Village of Wilmette, the fire department responded to the post office, at 1241 Central Ave., Monday evening due to reports of internal building damage.

“ office has remained closed due to the damage,” the village said in the post Wednesday, adding that it was “unaware of a timeframe” for reopening.

“The Village also does not know the impact that the closure will have on local mail service,” the post added, directing customers to contact the post office for more information.

In comments underneath the post, the village said the post office had not communicated any additional information about mail, mail service or hours of operation.

Photos captured by NBC 5 photographers at the post office Thursday showed yellow “Do not enter” signs posted to the front door of the building. An additional note on the door, dated Nov. 11, said the United States Postal Service has “implemented an emergency suspension of the Wilmette Post Office, effective immediately.”

“Normal street delivery will continue,” the sign said.

In a statement sent to NBC Chicago, the USPS confirmed a roof collapse occurred at the building late in the afternoon on Monday “due to weather conditions.”

Photos provided to NBC Chicago from the USPS showed the damage from the inside of the building, large chunks of drywall and other building materials covering the floor of the post office. Exposed wooden beams could be seen above, where parts of the roof had been ripped open.

As a result of the damage, the USPS has temporarily moved Wilmette operations to the Winnetka Post Office, located at 512 Chestnut St, the statement said.

“No substantial service impacts are anticipated,” the statement said. “We have not determined a date to reopen the Wilmette facility.

The statement added that no customers or employees were in the building at the time of the collapse.

“We appreciate the cooperation and patience of our customers and our employees,” the statement said.

According to the Wilmette Historical Museum booklet from 2020, the post office building, at Park and Central in downtown Wilmette, was built in 1934.

The Village of Wilmette did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s request for comment.
