The Arizona Fall League playoffs are underway, and two Chicago Cubs prospects shined brightest for the Mesa Solar Sox in their quarterfinal win.
Catching prospect Owen Ayers supplied the only three runs scored in the game with a tank of a homer:

Owen did his best Anthony Rizzo impression by dropping to one knee and clubbing a 3-run HR for the only scoring in the game. #Cubs #CubsProspects pic.twitter.com/R7vad3ZLeO

It has been really fun to see Ayers’ breakout this fall, and even if the sample is small, the environment hitter-friendly, and the pitching only so-so, the whole thing tracks with what he was starting to show in his full-season pro debut earlier this year. As we’ve discussed, Ayers is an older prospect (24) who’ll have to show a whole lot next year at High-A and probably even Double-A in order to stay on the prospect radar. But he’s a good catcher, which buys a little leeway on the bat, and he was only just drafted last year. Some quick development is not inconceivable.
As for Martinez-Gomez, 22, he’s struck out 16 batters in 9.1 innings this fall, and was already considered an intriguing sleeper prospect. The Cubs took him in the 10th round in 2023, and he pitched extremely well this year at Low-A and High-A, albeit primarily as a 1 or 2-inning reliever. I’ll be curious to see if the Cubs stretch him out next year, or if relief is the trajectory.
