Streeting denies plot to oust Starmer saying PM’s allies are trying to ‘kneecap’ him

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has denied “categorically” that he is plotting to oust Sir Keir Starmer as rumours emerged of a threat to the Labour leader.

Starmer was accused of “extraordinary paranoia” on Tuesday night as his aides launched a briefing war against Streeting over the Prime Minister’s future in Downing Street.

After an exclusive report in The i Paper revealed fresh plotting against Starmer, he is believed to be under threat from a leadership challenge by his backbenchers if the Budget later this month doesn’t shift public opinion.

“No 10 has gone absolutely mad after the report at the weekend,” a Labour source said. “The idea that Wes is briefing says more about No 10 than Wes. No 10 is in full bunker mode.”

“The list of reasons for people to move after the Budget are growing by the day,” one MP was reported to have said by the BBC, adding: “If Wes is brave and moves he may well be rewarded by being prime minister by Christmas.”

But this was denied by a spokesman for Streeting, who told the The i Paper, “these claims are categorically untrue”.

The Prime Minister has vowed to fight any push to oust him.

“This extraordinary paranoia is more fitting to the end of Gordon Brown’s premiership than a current prime minister,” the source added.

Starmer is preparing to face a threat to his leadership from within the Labour Party.

Welcome back to The i Paper’s politics blog on Wednesday, 12 November.

Sir Keir Starmer will face MPs at Prime Minister’s Questions after a briefing war in which his allies insisted he is ready to fight off challenges to his leadership.

A spokesman for Streeting was forced to deny reports that he has a group of some 50 Labour frontbenchers ready to walk away from Government should the 26 November financial statement land badly.
