The league is taking notice of the Chicago Bulls.
Off to an unexpectedly hot 6-3 start, the organization’s young roster has looked far more competitive than anyone expected. While everyone deserves their fair share of flowers for making that happen, the biggest bouquet undoubtedly goes to Josh Giddey.
The recently re-signed point guard has immediately exceeded his $100 million payday. The guard has been among the NBA’s top performers, averaging 21.4 points, 9.3 assists, and 9.6 rebounds per game. He also happens to be tied for second in double-doubles AND triple-doubles over the league’s first couple of weeks.
To be sure, whether Giddey could put up numbers has never necessarily been a concern. Thanks to his excellent passing instincts and rare positional size, he has been a box score stuffer since Year 1. Instead, it’s been the impact he’s had on winning basketball that has raised questions. Between inconsistent three-point shooting, lack of explosive athleticism, and poor defensive instincts, many have been quick to point out some of the guard’s flaws over the years.

Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn ImagesWell, Giddey is starting to right many of the wrongs. He is shooting 38.5 percent from downtown to start the year, which is up from his career-high 37.5 percent last season. The guard is also fourth in the NBA in total fastbreak points per game, and his current +4.8 efficiency differential on Cleaning the Glass is a career best. The team’s effective field goal percentage as a whole gets a +3.2 percent bump when Giddey is in the game, and their defense is shockingly holding teams to -6.2 fewer points per 100 possessions when he’s in the lineup.
We also have to consider that he has passed the eye test with flying colors. The primary reason the Bulls have the seventh-highest effective field goal percentage in the league is because of Giddey’s ability to see the floor. He has been tremendous at setting up his teammates and picking his spots to be aggressive. The 23-year-old has also looked considerably more physical on both sides of the ball. All in all, his command of the game has been similar to that of a true All-NBA-caliber player.
And perhaps that’s why some have now thrown him into that exact category.
Josh Giddey Makes Appearance on NBA’s MVP Ladder
The NBA’s Shaun Powell released the first MVP Ladder of the season, and the Chicago Bulls have a representative!
While Josh Giddey did not make the Top 5, he fell right outside the group of superstars at the No. 6 spot. The players stationed in front of him were Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Victor Wembanyama, and Luka Doncic, respectively. Rounding out the Top 10 after Giddey were Tyrese Maxey, Donovan Mitchell, Stephen Curry, and Alperen Sengun. Talk about a fantastic company!
Now, it’s important to note that these MVP rankings were released prior to the Bulls’ back-to-back losses this weekend. Josh Giddey failed to reach 20+ points in both games and shot a combined 11-32 from the field. He did at least dish a season-high 14 assists in the loss to the Bucks, but I think it’s fair to say that these games would have likely impacted his placement on the MVP Ladder had it been released today.
At the same time, I think it’s fair to say that he likely still would rank Top 10, which remains a major accomplishment. The Bulls are still a Top 4 team in the Eastern Conference and were very much in both games against Milwaukee and Cleveland. And, even with Giddey being a lot less efficient from the field, he remained a big reason why they were alive in those contests.
Do I see Giddey remaining this high on the leaderboard as we head deeper into the winter? It’s not necessarily out of the question, but I do think the return of Coby White could take some of the attention away from him. Also, if we’re being honest, I just don’t expect the Bulls to continue fighting for the East’s top seed. Can this group perhaps fight for a Top 6 spot? Sure. But we’re already starting to see them get knocked down a peg.
Nonetheless, an early appearance in the MVP Ladder still speaks to the impact Giddey has managed to have early on. He has shown Bulls fans that he is ready to take the next step and fill his role as a key building block for the future.
