BBC to apologise over edited Trump clip – here’s what you need to know

The BBC is expected to apologise for the misleading editing of a speech by US President Donald Trump in an episode of Panorama.

The Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, said on Sunday she is “confident” BBC bosses are treating allegations of bias with “the seriousness that this demands”.

It comes after The Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday that a memo by Michael Prescott, a former external adviser to the BBC’s editorial standards committee, raised concerns in the summer.

Here, The i Paper takes a look at what happened.

    What was in the memo?

Prescott reportedly raised concerns about the way clips were spliced together from sections of the US President’s speech on 6 January, 2021, in the documentary Trump: A Second Chance?, which was broadcast the week before last year’s US election.

The BBC was accused of making it appear that Trump told supporters he was going to walk to the US Capitol with them to “fight like hell”.

In fact, he said he would accompany them “to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard”.

The “fight like hell” comment came later in the speech, but the Panorama documentary put the clips together in a way that was said to be misleading.

The memo was mainly based on reports by the BBC journalist David Grossman, who is senior editorial adviser to the corporation’s editorial guidelines and standards committee.

Trump has long faced accusations that he incited supporters to storm the Capitol on 6 January.

Prescott’s dossier included other allegations of bias in the corporation’s reporting on the Israel-Hamas conflict and other subjects.

    What will the BBC say?

Samir Shah, the BBC’s chairman, is expected to write to the parliamentary cross party Culture, Media and Sport Committee on Monday to express regret for the way the speech, made on the day of the Capitol riot, was spliced together, The Telegraph and The Sunday Times reported.

He is expected to admit the corporation made a significant mistake in airing the edited clips.

The apology is set to be made in response to a request from the committee, which last week said the corporation had “serious questions to answer” over the Trump edit, The Sunday Times reported. The statement will also be shared with staff.

Senior executives are said to have defended the editing, saying it was “normal practice” and there was “no attempt to mislead the audience”.

What has Trump said in response?

Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s press secretary, accused the BBC of “purposeful dishonesty” and said British taxpayers were being “forced to foot the bill for a Leftist propaganda machine”.

She told The Telegraph: “This purposefully dishonest, selectively edited clip by the BBC is further evidence that they are total, 100 per cent fake news that should no longer be worth the time on the television screens of the great people of the United Kingdom.

“Every time I travel to the United Kingdom with President Trump and am forced to watch the BBC in our hotel rooms, it ruins my day listening to their blatant propaganda and lies about the president of the United States and all that he’s doing to make America better and the world a safer place.”

    What has the Government said?

Nandy told the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg show: “I have discussed the range of issues that were raised in the email that was leaked to the BBC.

“It isn’t just about the Panorama programme, although that is incredibly serious.

“There are a series of very serious allegations made, the most serious of which is that there is systemic bias in the way that difficult issues are reported at the BBC.”

She said she has “complete confidence” that both Samir Shah, the chair of the BBC, and BBC director-general Tim Davie “are treating this with the seriousness that this demands”.

Nandy said she wants to see the response to the committee, adding that she will “consider it” and “have further conversations with them about the action that they’re taking”.

She accused the corporation of having inconsistent standards.

She said: “What tends to happen at the BBC is that decisions about editorial standards, editorial guidelines, the sort of language that is used in reporting is entirely inconsistent.

“It doesn’t always meet the highest standards. It’s not always well thought through, and often it’s left to individual journalists or newsreaders to make decisions.

“That’s something that I have discussed at length with the director-general and the chair, and something that I expect them to grip.”

Why has Boris Johnson become involved?

BBC presenter Nick Robinson said on the Today programme: “As ever with these sorts of stories, it is clear that there is a genuine concern about editorial standards and mistakes, and there is also a political campaign by people who want to destroy the organisation that you are currently listening to.”

Former prime minister Boris Johnson responded to the comments, telling the Mail On Sunday: “There is a difference between trying to destroy the BBC and trying to hold it to account.

“This is just a diversionary tactic from an organisation that is too arrogant to think it might be at fault.”

Robinson responded in a post on X: “Hands up all those who think (Boris Johnson) is well placed to lecture anyone else on upholding standards (and) admitting mistakes.”
