Insider Shares Details on Bears NFL Trade Deadline Deal That Fell Apart at the Last Minute

The Chicago Bears were reportedly close to reuniting cornerback Alontae Taylor with Dennis Allen at the NFL Trade Deadline before a deal with the New Orleans Saints deal fell through.

I was watching ESPN’s coverage of the 2025 NFL Trade Deadline when league insider Adam Schefter was hinting at a possible buzzer-beating last-minute deal during the SportsCenter special’s last half-hour. But right before the clock struck midnight on the deadline, Schefter mentioned that a trade that he thought was going to go through fell apart at the end. That deal could have involved any number of teams and players. But given that this is a Bears-focused site, I am choosing to believe it was a potential trade for New Orleans Saint cornerback Alontae Taylor — which is detailed below by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport (bold emphasis mine):

Before the Colts stuck their mega deal for Gardner, they had discussions centered around Saints cornerback Alontae Taylor, who drew real interest on Monday and Tuesday. In fact, sources say the Bears were deep in talks for Taylor before a deal ended up falling through. Taylor, who is in a contract year and likely will get paid this offseason, spent time with Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen when he was head coach in New Orleans and the fit made sense. Alas, the Bears ended up dealing with the Browns for pass rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.

Hoo boy! This would have been a fun addition had the Bears and Saints been able to iron out a deal. Chicago’s football team needs help in the secondary, and General Manager Ryan Poles has never been shy about parting with picks if it meant improving his team.

Who is Alontae Taylor, why did the Bears try to trade for him, and what does it mean for the rest of the year?

The Bears’ reasoning for wanting Alontae Taylor is simple enough: Chicago needs help in the secondary in the worst way.

Alontae Taylor is a 26-year-old cornerback who is in his fourth season with the Saints. A second-round pick (49th overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft, Taylor has appeared in 56 games (45 starts) during his time with New Orleans. He has two interceptions (but none since 2023), 45 passes defended, 3 forced fumbles, 6 sacks, 18 tackles-for-loss, and 8 quarterback hits to his name in his career. Taylor’s 58.6 overall grade from Pro Football Focus puts him at 61st among the 106 cornerbacks who have played enough snaps to qualify for the leaderboard.

My main takeaways from this non-trade are simple enough:

The Bears were aggressive (albeit not for game-changing impact players whose acquisition likely would have come at the cost of mortgaging high-value future draft picks). And I’m OK with that (for now). This front office sees things we see as fans. If it didn’t, then it would not have targeted defensive inemen and cornerbacks as trade targets. Adding depth at both of those positions were the top needs at the trade deadline, and they almost pulled off going 2-for-2. They didn’t. But it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Between signing Chauncey Gardner-Johnson as a free agent and targeting Alontae Taylor in a trade, it is clear that Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen has a notable amount of pull in the player personnel decision-making process. This feels like something worth remembering next offseaosn when Chicago is looking to make additions via trades and free agency.

WELP, THE CHICAGO BEARS MADE JUST ONE TRADE AT THE DEADLINE

Lost in the madness that was an epic game featuring heroics by quarterback Caleb Williams, tight end Colston Loveland, running back Kyle Monangai, and a host of others is the fact that 40-year-old Joe Flacco put up 470 passing yards and 4 touchdowns while playing through an injury to his throwing shoulder. As it turns out, getting Tyrique Stevenson back from an injury and adding Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to the mix wasn’t enough to slow down pass-catchers like Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. No wonder the Bears were hot for Taylor ahead of the trade deadline. It is a shame that they couldn’t get it across the finish line.
