Considering that Bon Jovi was one of the bestselling bands of the '80s (not to mention the fact that they're still beloved by fans decades later as they prepare to embark on a major international tour in 2026), it should come as no surprise that their biggest hits are among the most popular rock songs on Spotify...or that their most-streamed song of all is probably the first tune people think of when they hear the name "Bon Jovi."
At the time of this writing, Bon Jovi's 1986 hit single, "Livin' on a Prayer," from the massively successful album Slippery When Wet, has been streamed over 2 billion times on Spotify. In a 2023 interview with The Guardian, songwriter and producer Desmond Child, who co-wrote the song with Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, reflected on its origins and enduring legacy.
"During Covid, the whole city of Chicago opened their windows at the same time and sang 'Livin’ on a Prayer,'" he recalled, adding, “It gave them hope and community. Jon Bon Jovi always tells me, ‘We didn’t just write a song — we wrote something special.’”
According to Child, "Livin' on a Prayer" was written "on a Formica table in a dingy basement" and was partially inspired by the early years of Child's career and his struggles alongside then-girlfriend, singer-songwriter Maria Vidal.
“They wanted a working-class anthem,” Child recalled. “The Gina character is Maria Vidal, whose waitressing name was Gina Velvet. Tommy is me. It was originally Gina and Johnny, but Jon said, ‘I can’t sing Johnny, that’s my name.’”
Jon Bon Jovi didn't expect 'Livin' on a Prayer' to be a huge hit
In a 2024 interview with PBS News Hour, Bon Jovi admitted that he wasn't sure about the future of "Livin' on a Prayer" when they first started writing the song, noting that it "evolved" into the hit it would become.
"When we'd written it on that day, it was a very simple chord structure," he recalled. "The melody, the lyric was finished. We knew all of that. But it came to life when the band got in the room and we developed the bass line, and Tico [Torres] came in playing the drums...And that's when it popped. That's when the key change happened at the end."
As Bon Jovi explained, "Livin' on a Prayer" wasn't even the first single on Slippery When Wet.
"'You Give Love a Bad Name' was the first single, because that sort of sounded like what was on the radio, what a hit song sounded like," Bon Jovi explained. "When we wrote that, when we were like, I think we got one here. "Prayer" was so different. And it was the second single, and, of course, the billions of steams and all that stuff later."
One thing's for sure...nobody in Bon Jovi will ever have to work on the docks.
