A group of suburban moms were among more than a dozen people arrested outside the immigration processing facility in Broadview Friday, witnesses said.
The arrests happened during the latest round of protests outside the facility. Protests have taken place outside the Broadview ICE processing facility frequently throughout the ramp-up of federal immigration operations in the Chicago area, known as “Operation Midway Blitz.“
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said at least 14 people were arrested Friday.
Witnesses said the group of moms staged a sit in outside of the designated protest zone.
They formed a circle and joined hands in the middle of the street. That’s when witnesses say police surrounded them and took them into custody.
New video shows several women being taken away by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office moments after witnesses said they were demonstrating peacefully in the middle of the street.
“Nobody was causing any damage, nobody was causing any harm, there was no traffic being impeded now these very well-meaning mothers who were here to speak up for the voices of children who can’t speak up for themselves were carried away,” said Reverend Carol Hill, who is the senior minister of Park Ridge Community Church.
Interfaith leaders gathered for a prayer service in front of the ICE processing facility shortly after the women were detained. They were joined by protesters who have been demonstrating in Broadview for weeks against the Trump administration.
“We believe that our faith is stronger than fear in any chaos that they can create so we’re here standing in solidarity letting people know we’re going to continue to fight for our people because we believe that we have the power to conquer,” said Reverend Ciera Bates Chamberlain, Live Free Illinois Executive Director.
They oppose federal agents’ use of force including deploying tear gas during Operation Midway Blitz. Some members of the Live Free Illinois group also attempted to hand a letter requesting access inside the facility.
“Our goal is continue to request and demand that people get the type of spiritual care that they need especially under these extreme circumstances while they’re under duress,” said Rev. Chamberlain.
Protesters said they want to send a message and defend the actions of the group of suburban moms who were taken into custody.
“Nothing is more important than the harm that is happening to people we have to get people’s attention to notice what’s actually going on,” said Meg Thomas-Cary, witness. “Someone sitting in the road is not doing harm, people being apprehended harmful.”
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said the people arrested ranged in age from 23 to 59 years old.
Those arrested are facing charges of obstruction and disorderly conduct.
NBC Chicago did not immediately receive a response from DHS regarding the request made by the interfaith leaders.
The Broadview facility is at the center of an ongoing lawsuit in which detainees alleged they were subjected to “inhumane” conditions inside.
