Would You Do Bill Simmons’ Coby White Trade If You Were the Chicago Bulls?

Can the Chicago Bulls enjoy their 6-1 start before all the trade drama starts up?

Pssh, what a silly question! This is the NBA, folks. Trade season never ends! Heck, if anything, the Chicago Bulls’ hot start has only created more trade conversations worth having. Nikola Vucevic previously felt like an immovable asset; now he’s playing like one of the NBA’s best big men. While he might be on the verge of missing his third straight game, Ayo Dosunmu has looked like a potential Sixth Man of the Year candidate when available. Could that make it more likely that the Bulls re-sign him next summer?

Then, of course, there is the biggest trade question of them all: What the heck should the Bulls do with Coby White? While the guard has yet to even step on the court this season, the team’s hot start has only made this situation more complicated. Are the Bulls showing that they can be successful without White, and thus should cash in on his potential value before he hits free agency? Or could Coby White be the kind of player that helps the Bulls go from good to great?

If one thing is for sure, long-time NBA personality Bill Simmons has already thought about what moving White could look like for Chicago. On the most recent episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, the Podfather posed a trade that would send White to a Western Conference Finals contender and net the Bulls another high-upside guard:

    Chicago Bulls:

    Donte DiVincenzo + Rob Dillingham

    Timberwolves:

    Coby White

    Color me intrigued.

Let me preface my thoughts on this exact deal by saying that I’m not ready to say moving Coby White is a *must.* I think that getting him back on the floor and seeing if he can pick up where he left off last season should be the Bulls’ primary focus right now. Especially with the team playing as well as they are, they would be doing themselves a disservice not to evaluate what things look like with White’s explosive three-level scoring in the mix.

Coby White Will Fit in Just Fine with Surging Chicago Bulls

At the same time, the Bulls are not in a situation where they can completely ignore the idea of a potential trade. The fact of the matter is that White will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2026. All signs also point toward him warranting a payday that reaches $30+ million a year. The Bulls need to be confident that a Giddey-White duo can compete with the East’s best; otherwise, it’s likely not worth investing $55+ million into that backcourt.

So again, Chicago may not have to be ready to talk business right now, but this could very well become the right thing to do as the deadline nears. And a trade like the one Simmons proposes sure feels good enough for the Bulls to have a serious discussion about.

Rob Dillingham was selected No. 8 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft and is only 20 years old. An incredibly dynamic and efficient scorer at Kentucky, he certainly still feels like an asset worth gambling on. The Timberwolves have been in win-now mode and simply haven’t had the flexibility to give the youngster a chance to find his footing. Obviously, the Bulls may now be winning more games than anyone expected, but they are still in a far better position to uplift young talent.

Heck, the whole reason the Bulls are in this advantageous position is because of their willingness to embrace a youth movement. They pursued a former lottery pick in Josh Giddey last offseason and did so again with Isaac Okoro this summer. I don’t think it’s hard to see a world where this front office would be interested in doing that again. This is especially true when we consider that Coby White was a decent comp for Dillingham coming out of college. Yes, he’s far less proven, but he has the potential to provide a similar kind of speed and shooting that can really thrive in this current Bulls system.

Let’s also not act as if Donte DiVincenzo is just some kind of throw-in to make the money work. He is a high-quality role player with an excellent shooting stroke that would immediately add to this team’s already elite depth. Plus, we have seen him be a coveted piece in trades to contenders before. The Bulls may be able to flip his cost-effective salary in a year.

Ok, so what grade would I give this fake trade if it happened today? I’d probably go with a solid B. Yes, there is a very real world where White remains the best player in this deal and thrives in Minnesota. But there is also a very real world where the Bulls either lose him this summer for nothing in return OR end up paying him well over $30+ million a season because the many teams with cap space jack up the price. If the Bulls avoided that outcome while receiving a recently coveted prospect and respected role player in return, I have to consider that a win.

Nevertheless, I do think this type of deal is a pretty good example of what White’s value would be on the open market. Some might argue that he is worth even more, but the fact that he is a free agent in 2026 will undoubtedly work against Chicago. With all that said, I still wouldn’t pull the trigger on this trade if the Timberwolves came calling right now. The first step is to welcome White back into the starting lineup and see if the Bulls’ magic continues. Then, as the sample size grows, we can revisit the trade conversations.
