Blackhawks 3, Jets 4 (OT) — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The opening 20 minutes was highly entertaining. Anton Frondell was on the ice for the anthems and the opening draw, and he was then the best player on either team in the first period. He was credited with three of the Blackhawks’ nine shots on net; Winnipeg had six shots on net thru 20 minutes. One goal went in — and it was an NHL first.

As has been the case far too often against teams on the cusp of making the playoffs this year, a really good first period ended with the Blackhawks leading by just one, and they surrendered that margin 66 seconds into the second period. The Jets scored twice in 38 seconds in the middle of the period and the Blackhawks were able to miraculously answer with one of their own. The Blackhawks were very fortunate to go to the third period down only one. The Jets out-shot the Blackhawks 15-2 in the second period.

The Blackhawks came out after getting their butts kicked in the second period and attacked early and often in the third. They had a 63-second 5-on-3 that didn’t convert, but Frank Nazar had some Grade A chances that just missed. The Hawks were able to tie the game in the middle of the period. This game required more than 60 minutes. The Jets needed 33 seconds in OT to end it, though.

    Star 1: Tyler Bertuzzi

The goal Bertuzzi scored in the second period was absolutely ludicrous. The Blackhawks had allowed three unanswered and desperately needed some offense. He made something out of nothing. Wow! His second goal of the night — which tied the game at three — gave him a new career high 31 on the season. He was a man on a mission tonight, especially late in the third period. We saw more backchecking from Bertuzzi tonight than we might have seen in two months combined last year. And he was hounding the puck. He’s been special all year, but this was one of his best efforts.

    Star 2: Anton Frondell

You score your first goal in the NHL, you get one of my stars for the night. Frondell joined Henri Jokiharju and Artemi Panarin as the only Blackhawks in the last 15 years to record five points in their first five NHL games. This came at the end of a magnificent shift early in the first period.

    Star 3: Ilya Mikheyev

Mikheyev had the nice pass that set up Frondell’s first career goal in the first — his 100th career helper. He ran over a Jets player to knock the puck loose, leading to Bertuzzi’s first goal. And he made the pass that found Bertuzzi to tie the game in the third.

    Key Takeaways

Every time Jonathan Toews appeared on the scoreboard — during the Canadian anthem, when he came on the ice for warm-ups, when he jumped on the ice for his first shift — there was a loud ovation from the United Center faithful. As there should be. The line of Frondell, Bertuzzi and Mikheyev was great the entire night. They consistently flipped the ice. They created scoring chances for each other. And Frondell’s instincts are really special, folks. The Blackhawks played a really good first period. According to Natural Stat Trick, the Blackhawks didn’t allow a single high danger chance in the first period (they had three). This comes on the heels of them allowing 26 high danger chances against them on Sunday in New Jersey. The Jets had nine high danger chances in the second period. I liked what I saw from both Kevin Korchinski and Ethan Del Mastro in the first period. Del Mastro took a penalty in the second, but they were still pretty good in the second. I was interested to see if the bench shortened again like it did on Sunday and it did not; Korchinski and Del Mastro got a shift inside the final four minutes of regulation tonight. Landon Slaggert has to have better awareness on the PK than he showed just before the Jets took the lead in the second period. Alex Vlasic, Louis Crevier and Teuvo Teräväinen were all on the ice for the entire penalty kill at that point. Just get it deep and let them get off — even if Vlasic is streaking up the middle. The Blackhawks started overtime with Frondell, Connor Bedard and Wyatt Kaiser on the ice.
