The Cubs have sputtered a bit out of the gate this year, with a couple of blowout wins on Saturday and Monday interspread with three stinkers on Opening Day (pitchers’ fault), Sunday (hitters’ fault), and tonight (hitters’ fault).
They lost this one 2-0 with just four hits and four walks through nine innings at home. And they are back to a game under .500. Woof.
None of that means anything, of course. Especially tonight’s game, which they played without Seiya Suzuki, in freezing cold conditions, and against an absolutely LOCKED-in José Soriano. But that doesn’t make it any less frustrating. And the losses count all the same. But what can you really say? Soriano just looked incredible from start to finish, stacking another six scoreless innings on top of the six scoreless he tossed against the Astros in his first start earlier this season.
Oh, and the one time it looked like the Cubs were just about to get Soriano on the ropes, he pulled this rabbit out of his hat on what looked like an easy bunt single for Pete Crow-Armstrong:

— MLB (@MLB) April 1, 2026If PCA is safe there, it’s first and second with nobody out. Instead, that was the first out of the inning, followed by back-to-back strikeouts from Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson.
Anyway, that performance from Soriano (6.0 IP, 2H, 0ER, 2BB, 4K) makes him an easy choice for Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game.
But you can’t fault the entire Cubs team tonight, because the pitching staff actually put in some really nice work (outside of all the free passes).
Jameson Taillon kicked things off with 4.2 scoreless innings. And although he left the bases loaded (after an intentional walk to Mike Trout with runners on second and third), Hoby Milner got them out of it quickly with a strikeout to end the biggest threat of the night.
Indeed, the only runs the pitching staff did allow occurred when Alex Bregman just barely missed a two-out rocket groundball (104.6 MPH) off the bat of Logan O’Hoppe. He got a glove on it, but it was too hot to handle. If Bregman had set up a half-step to his left, he would’ve stopped it and ended the inning right there. Too bad that’s not how baseball works.
The other notable performance tonight came from Ben Brown, who delivered 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk against 5 strikeouts. If you’re keeping score at home, that’s over SIX innings covered by Brown and Rea the past two games alone. That’s pretty huge if they can find a way to make that work all season.
Final thought: Although Jameson Taillon found success tonight, his velocity was definitely still down and descending as the night went on. In fact, it averaged under 90 MPH when he exited in the fifth. That is … not great. But we’ll get to that tomorrow.
