CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A man is facing several charges, including attempted first-degree murder, following a stabbing on a CATS bus Thursday evening that has left another man fighting for his life in the hospital, Mecklenburg County court documents confirm.
Court records state that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers responded at 4:50 p.m. to reports of a stabbing on CATS bus 2123 near 1409 North Tryon Street, just north of uptown.
When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds, including one near his chest. He was rushed to Atrium Health Main with life-threatening injuries.
Off-duty Cleveland County deputy charged with first-degree murder after deadly domestic incidentWitnesses told CMPD that the suspect, later identified as James Bennett, 57, and the victim appeared to know each other from the bus route and had boarded at a stop near the Walmart on Tryon Street. Passengers reported that the suspect followed the victim through the bus before attacking him near the driver’s seat.
CMPD investigators said surveillance video from the bus showed Bennett stabbing the victim with what appeared to be "a dark-bladed knife." A bystander reportedly intervened, and Bennett ran from the CATS bus.
Court documents said Bennett was found a few hours later wearing the same clothes seen in the CATS surveillance footage, with blood on his boots and a cut on his hand. He was taken into custody and later charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
Double homicide investigation underway in Monroe, police sayCourt records show Bennett has a prior criminal history involving assault charges. He invoked his right to remain silent and requested an attorney after his arrest, documents state.
As of Friday morning, the victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Bennett is currently being held at the Mecklenburg County detention center without bond.
CMPD said the investigation remains open and ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
