Metal hairpins, wire reportedly found inside Halloween candy in northern suburb

Police in north suburban Waukegan are investigating after metal hairpins and wire were reportedly found inside candy on Halloween.

The Waukegan Police Department said in a Facebook post that foreign objects, including metal hairpins and wire, were discovered inside wrapped, unopened candy during trick-or-treating.

As a precaution, police urged parents and guardians to carefully inspect all candy before allowing children to eat it.

“Please examine each piece to the best of your ability and do not consume any candy that appears tampered with or contains suspicious objects,” police said in the post.

Anyone who finds suspicious candy or foreign objects inside candy is asked to call the Waukegan Police Department at 847-360-9000.

Police also shared a photo showing what appeared to be hairpins and other metal objects alongside pieces of candy. However, authorities did not provide details about where the candy was from.
