ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Miss Julie’s School of Beauty, a nonprofit cosmetology school dedicated to empowering survivors of sex trafficking, is making waves as the first of its kind in the nation. The school works closely with Brightstar, an organization providing a safe home for trafficked and exploited women.

News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin attended fundraising events for both organizations and spoke with a survivor who shared her gratitude for the support she received.

“She would be opening a house — you know rent free two years where they get you in touch with a whole bunch of services you wouldn’t have by yourself. So I did the whole two years and I graduated,” Lexi Herrmann, a survivor, said.

Herrmann has overcome significant challenges from her past.

“Pretty much homeless on the streets. I kind of isolated myself from all family. There’s no hope out there we kind of tell ourselves this lie we’ll never make it. This is our life and this is where we will be for the rest of our life,” Herrmann said.

Herrmann now serves as a beacon of hope for others.

“I think with programs like Brightstar and Miss Julie’s School of Beauty we’re giving hope back to these women. And when they see me they know if I can do it they can too,” Herrmann said.

Sue Kirby, CEO and founder of Brightstar Community Inc., emphasized the importance of partnerships with other organizations to expand outreach efforts.

“And we know this individual has one year clean and sober and they have an interest in going to cosmetology school we can then refer them to Miss Julie’s school,” Kirby said.

Miss Julie’s School of Beauty recently celebrated receiving its state license after three years. The “Cheers to Change” event was held at Flight Bar in Rochester.

“I wanted a therapeutic environment where people would feel seen heard validated. And I also wanted like a real legitimate licensure you know. I wanted somebody to be able to have a career where they can make money and the sky is the limit,” said Julie Chapus, owner of Miss Julie’s School of Beauty.

Chapus explained that to join the cosmetology program, a survivor must be referred and have completed one year of therapy.
