The Colorado Rockies Are Reportedly Hiring Browns Executive Paul DePodesta as Their New President of Baseball Operations

The Colorado Rockies, man. They will always keep things interesting.

After what had seemingly been a traditional front office search yielded a couple up-and-comers who didn’t get the job for one reason or another, the Rockies are going in a different direction for their new baseball leader.

    A VERY different direction:

You may remember Paul DePodesta from his role with the Oakland A’s circa ‘Moneyball,’ but he’s actually been out of baseball for the better part of a decade. He left baseball in favor of a gig with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, a wild move at the time.

Here’s how The Athletic’s report characterized DePodesta’s role with the Browns:

“At least by organizational chart and responsibility, DePodesta did not make personnel decisions. He worked with ownership and football operations on various projects and was regarded as a large part of the team’s planning for free agency each March and the NFL draft each April. He always had a behind-the-scenes, mostly secretive role, and continued to live in La Jolla, California, and either work remotely or commute to Northeast Ohio.”

And now he’ll move back into baseball, taking over operations for the Rockies, after a decade of that mysterious job with the Browns. Incredible. Maybe it’ll work out just fine. Or maybe it’ll be a glorious sideshow, as most things with the Rockies have been for a very long time.

I like to imagine Rockies owner Dick Monfort watching ‘Moneyball,’ and telling an assistant, “That guy! I want THAT guy!” To which the assistant replies, “Sir, that’s Brad Pitt. And, the person he is portraying is certainly unavailable.” And Monfort says, “Fine, fine. Get me the other guy!” Then the assistant says, “But, sir, he’s been working in football for the last nine years.” And Monfort bellows, “I SAID WHAT I SAID!”
