The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) men’s swimming & diving season has been put on pause.
The NCAA Division III team, which competes in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), is under review after the CMS Athletics became aware of “concerning behaviors” within the program, the school told SwimSwam on Thursday.
“CMS Athletics became aware of concerning behaviors within the Stags Swim & Dive program and, as a result, paused athletically-related activities to conduct a thorough review to ensure alignment with our community values and expectations,” CMS Athletics said in a statement.
“Before returning to the pool, we are currently allowing time for guided, intentional reflection on the responsibility, both individually and collectively, to meet those expectations and to maintain a positive team culture. The CMS Men’s Swim & Dive season has not been cancelled.”
The Stags have raced twice so far this season, edging out Simon Fraser (103-101) and falling to UC San Diego (125-72) on Oct. 18, and then contesting their annual alumni meet last weekend.
Although the school said the team’s season has not been canceled, it seems unlikely they’ll be in attendance for their scheduled meet on Saturday at Chapman University, where Whittier College and the host Panthers will be in action.
This is the second time in six years the CMS swim & dive program has gone under investigation. In November 2019, the team was assigned mandatory education programming after three senior women quit over a document produced by senior members of the men’s team entitled the “Stag Survival Guide,” which team members said included racially and sexually inappropriate language. The school said an investigation found the behavior justified the assignment of mandatory education programming for members of the men’s and women’s teams, and some members of the men’s team were given additional education requirements, though no athletes were suspended from competition.
Based in Claremont, Calif., the CMS swim & dive teams represent three of the five undergraduate Claremont Colleges: Scripps College, Claremont McKenna College and Harvey Mudd College.
