CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT) could soon feel the impact of the ongoing government shutdown.
Starting at midnight, the Federal Aviation Administration plans to reduce air traffic by 10% across 40 major markets nationwide. The move is designed to ease the strain on air traffic controllers, many of whom are still working without pay.
For now, CLT says it hasn’t received official notice of any flight reductions, but some passengers flying out of the Queen City have already been warned about “possible delays or disruptions.”
More than 1,400 flights move through Charlotte Douglas every day. A 10% cut could affect well over 100 flights if the FAA’s plan extends to the airport.
Federal officials, including Transportation Secretary Duffy, recently met with airline leaders to determine how each market will be affected. Air traffic controllers have already missed one paycheck and are expected to miss another next week, while working mandatory six-day weeks.
Delays are already showing up nationwide, especially in New York and Chicago, and could spread as staffing issues continue.
