Khaled el-Enany has been elected Director-General of UNESCO, becoming the first Arab to hold the position. The General Conference of UNESCO announced that el-Enany received 172 votes out of 174 ballots.
El-Enany will succeed Audrey Azoulay, who has held the position since 2017. He will officially take office on 15 November for a four-year term. He is the 12th Director-General of UNESCO.
Born in 1971, el-Enany is an Egyptologist and a professor at Helwan University, where he has taught for more than 30 years. From 2016 to 2022, he served as Minister of Antiquities and then as Minister of Tourism and Antiquities in Egypt.
