In her first on-court action in 607 days, Alabama women’s basketball guard Jessica Timmons excelled in the team’s 82-73 victory over Stetson, scoring 21 points and dishing out 5 assists.
The redshirt senior missed the entire 2024-25 season after she suffered a knee injury in the 2024 SEC tournament in the team’s 83-61 loss to Tennessee. She will be tasked with filling the shoes of star guards Aaliyah Nye, Sarah Ashlee Barker and Zaay Green, who departed the program due to expiring eligibility.
Timmons provided a spark for the Crimson Tide on offense in the win and is expected to do so going forward after it lost 67% of its scoring from last season.
She saw 37 minutes of gametime in Monday’s win, with fellow guards Ace Austin, Eris Lester and Waiata Jennings out with injuries. While Austin is considered day-to-day, and both Lester and Jennings are expected to return, Timmons will likely continue to see a prominent minutes-share as the season progresses.
Head coach Kristy Curry said she was “really proud” of Timmons’ aggressiveness, toughness and ability to get to the free-throw line.
Despite the strong night on offense, Curry said she believes Timmons has room for improvement defensively after the team struggled to contain Stetson’s 3-point shooters. The Hatters were able to put up 23 attempts from beyond the arc and connected on 12.
With 6:03 left in the third quarter, Stetson had made 10 of 16 from 3-point range, an astounding 62.5% conversion rate.
“I’m just more concerned about the defensive end,” Curry said. “We may get 21, but how much are we giving up?”
Timmons scored the Crimson Tide’s first points of the season and led the team in scoring from start to finish. For much of the first half, she was one of the few Alabama players able to generate offense.
Alabama women’s basketball will return to the court on Thursday when it hosts McNeese State at Coleman Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT and can be streamed on SEC Network+.
