‘Economic challenges’ force Jax Fish House to close a 12-year-old metro location

A popular Front Range restaurant group is closing one of its metro Denver spots this month, in part because of the difficult economic environment and partly because of its proximity to another location, its ownership group said.

Big Red F Restaurant Group is closing the Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar in CitySet Plaza, 650 S. Colorado Blvd.) in Glendale, on Saturday, Nov. 15. Other Jax locations in LoDo, Boulder, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs will continue their regular operations.

“The current economic challenges facing the hospitality industry, which many have read about and experienced firsthand, have caught up to us in Glendale,” Jax said in an announcement. “In addition, the proximity of our LoDo location has always presented challenges for sustaining both restaurants in the Denver market.”

The company, founded by Boulder restaurateur Dave Query, opened its LoDo location in 1996.

Some Jax employees are transferring from the Glendale location to other Big Red F restaurants, the company stated. Big Red F also owns multiple outlets of The Post Chicken & Beer, and Boulder restaurants Centro Mexican Kitchen and West End Tavern.

Query has been outspoken about the difficulties that restaurants are currently facing, particularly in Denver.
