Some people planning their trip to the polls on the last day of early voting Saturday typed their names on the state’s online voter search tool and couldn’t find evidence they were ever registered.
An outage made it seem as if voter information had disappeared.
Kathleen Roblez, a lawyer with Forward Justice who worked on a statewide voter hotline Saturday, said calls came in from voters and volunteers who couldn’t find their names on the site.
“It caused a lot of people to be panicked that they had gotten kicked off the rolls somehow,” she said.
Colin Loftin, North Carolina Board of Elections database manager, said in an email to NC Newsline that the outage did not affect voting, and no one was turned away from polling places.
Loftin said the problem was caused by a database replication error. He said the outage lasted about 8 hours, and the portal was working normally again by about 8:30 p.m.
Early voting ended at 3:00 p.m. Saturday in municipalities that offered it.
Municipal elections are being held in 88 counties to elect city council members, mayors and other local officials. Some of the state’s biggest cities, including Charlotte, Greensboro, Durham, and Wilmington are electing mayors, and Charlotte has a transportation sales tax question on the ballot.
Some voters on Saturday were trying to check the voter database to make sure they were registered at the correct address, Roblez said. They wanted to know if they needed to bring extra documents in case they needed to record an address change, she said.
Others called the hotline because they wanted someone to know there was a problem.
There was no official notice of the outage until early voting ended.
A notice posted to social media and on the lookup site would be helpful if another outage were to happen “so people would know as soon as possible,” Roblez said.
