Which football leagues are truly the strongest in the world? The Opta Power Rankings can give us a data-driven answer that goes beyond individual teams to measure league strength.
Which football league is the strongest in the world right now?
For years, the conversation has been dominated by the same assumption: the Premier League is the best league in the world, followed by La Liga, the Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1. Together, those make up the so-called traditional “top five European leagues” and are ranked as the top five coefficients by UEFA.
But is that still valid? And if so, how big is the gap to the chasing pack?
What about the strength of leagues outside of Europe, like MLS, the Saudi Pro League, Brazil’s Série A or Argentina’s Primera División? Is there a second-tier competition, like the English Championship, that is stronger than top-flight leagues elsewhere? And can we finally answer the question of who is playing in a stronger league: Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi?
We can turn to the Opta Power Rankings to help answer those questions, and a whole lot more.
That’s because the Opta Power Rankings — the same model that we can use to analyse the best individual football teams in the world — can also be used to measure league strength across world football.
By looking at the average ratings of every team in each competition, as well as the performance levels of the top clubs, we can assess competitive depth and overall league quality from every competition in the world.
How It Works:
For those unfamiliar, the Opta Power Rankings assess and rate more than 15,000 men’s and women’s domestic teams across the globe on advanced performance metrics. Each team receives a score on a global scale, from 0 (the weakest) to 100 (the strongest).
By taking the average rating of each team in a given league, we can then identify which leagues house the highest concentration of elite clubs — a strong indicator of overall league strength.
In the table we show three columns:
League average rating – the average rating of all clubs in the competition. Top 10 clubs average – the average rating of the 10 highest-rated clubs in each league. Top 5 clubs average – the average rating of the five highest-rated clubs in each league. This breakdown allows us to see differences between leagues that have a few standout clubs (e.g., Portugal, Netherlands) versus those with more consistent depth across many teams.
