Long before Stevie Nicks guest-starred on American Horror Story: Coven as a "White Witch," the Fleetwood Mac songstress was known for her ethereal, magical vibes...so it should come as no surprise that she's talked about believing in everything from ghosts to past lives (or that she has a theory about how one of those previous incarnations came to a horrifying end).
In a 1982 interview with Playboy, Nicks was asked if people "had difficulty taking [her] seriously," given her mystical leanings.
"At this point, people believe it’s me. I just couldn’t go on making this trip up if it weren’t true," she said, adding, "I love Halloween and fairy tales. I get wonderful letters: Kids say they love the songs and 'Go right ahead and live in your fairy princess castle, because we need somebody to live there and make us happy, to take away some of the everyday horribleness that goes on.'"
The interviewer went on to ask Nicks what some of her past lives were.
"I think I spent a lot of time in old churches, like a monk," Nicks said.
"I’m very comfortable around that kind of music, with that kind of creeping around, with being very quiet," she continued. "My ballet teacher believes that my head was cut off in another life, too. I totally give with my body except for my neck. Even if I go to the beauty salon, I can’t put my head back. They have to hold it or it will drop. The same thing happens when I dance or get a massage. It’s very weird."
The singer went on to explain that she "can’t do what I do if I don’t retain some innocence and spirituality. You’d see a definite change in my lyrics if I became hardened. I’m not interested in existing on that critical level most people live on."
Stevie Nicks believes she was visited by her late mother
In a 2020 interview with The Guardian, Nicks shared her feelings on aging and death, saying, “some people are really afraid of dying, but I’m not. I’ve always believed in spiritual forces. I absolutely know that my mom is around all the time.”
Nicks went on to explain that after her mother died in 2012, she was standing in her kitchen, suffering from “really bad acid reflux."
“And I felt something almost tap my shoulder and this voice go: ‘It’s that Gatorade you’re drinking,’” she recalled. “I’d been sick and chugging down the Hawaiian Punch. Now, that’s not some romantic, gothic story of your mother coming back to you. It’s your real mother, walking into your kitchen and saying, ‘Don’t drink any more of that s—t.’”
Whatever Nicks' past lives entail, her fans would agree that this one has been a smashing success.
