Why Kim Kardashian’s aneurysm isn’t as rare as it sounds

Kim Kardashian has been diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, when an artery in the brain bulges outwards, creating a risk it could one day burst.

The condition may sound alarming, but it is surprisingly common and often does not cause problems or need any treatment.

In fact, such aneurysms are being increasingly diagnosed when people have brain scans for other reasons, causing growing numbers to get worried unnecessarily, experts have said.

“The vast majority of people who have a brain aneurysm never get diagnosed and live their entire lives without any problems,” said Dr Jeremy Lynch, a neuroradiologist at King’s College Hospital.

Aneurysms can be up to a few centimetres long but in most they are only a few millimetres. They are present in 3 per cent of people.

Kardashian has blamed her aneurysm on stress. Stress can lead to high blood pressure, which may worsen aneurysms.

Smoking is another risk factor, and the codition is more common in women, especially as they get older, although it isn’t clear why. It can also run in families.

Why more aneurysms are being discovered

Aneurysms may only be discovered if they burst, when it is a medical emergency, and can be fatal. “People say it’s like being hit with a sledgehammer,” said Dr Thomas Booth, who is also a neuroradiologist at King’s College London. “People can actually get knocked over and they look around and see if someone’s hit them. It’ll be described as the worst headache of their life.”

But if they do not rupture, most aneurysms don’t cause any symptoms. And more people are being diagnosed with these symptomless aneurysms because of the growing use of MRI brain scans, for instance to investigate tinnitus, headaches or concussion.

The condition may also be spotted in the growing numbers of people paying private clinics for whole-body scans as a general health check-up. “Scans are great in terms of answering a particular question, but there are often these ‘incidental’ findings,” said Dr Booth.

“People get concerned and worried,” said Rebecca Middleton, founder of a charity called Hereditary Brain Aneurysm Support.

There are treatments that can stop an aneurysm from rupturing, such as putting into the artery a stent, a hollow tube that covers up the bulge so blood cannot flow into it.

But the surgery also carries a risk of causing a stroke. So it will be recommended only if that is outweighed by the risk of the aneurysm bursting.

Aneurysms are more dangerous if they are larger, irregular in shape and if they are in the blood vessels that supply the back of the head.

People are also more likely to be advised surgery if they are younger, because over time the risk adds up. “A younger patient has more chance it will rupture in their lifespan,” said Dr Lynch, who has developed an online tool to help doctors calculate how the different factors lead to an overall risk level.

For most people, the risk of aneurysm rupture will be so low that they will be advised just to have regular monitoring. “If it’s a certain size, it will be monitored for a number of years and might never cause a problem,” said Middleton.
