Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears will host Spencer Rattler and the New Orleans Saints this Sunday at Soldier Field. It will mark the first time that the two former college teammates will go head-to-head as professionals.
But to be clear, they’re hardly strangers. Both quarterbacks spent the 2021 college football season with the Oklahoma Sooners. Rattler, who was a highly touted college prospect in his own right, began the season as the starting quarterback with Williams serving as his backup.
However, things began to change when Oklahoma and Texas squared off in the Red River Rivalry game on Oct. 9, 2021. In that game, Oklahoma fell behind 28-7 by the end of the first quarter. And with the score still sitting at 28-7, then-Oklahoma Head Coach Lincoln Riley sent Caleb Williams in for a critical 4th-and-1 play. Williams made the most of the moment by running 66 yards for a touchdown. It brought the Sooners back to life, and began one of the greatest comebacks in the Red River Rivalry game’s history.
A few drives after Williams’ touchdown run, he replaced Rattler for good. He ended the game throwing for 212 yards and two more touchdowns. Those efforts helped Oklahoma outscore Texas 25-7 in the 4th quarter en route to a 55-48 win. With the two set for a showdown on the lakefront this Sunday, it seemed like a fun and appropriate time to revisit Caleb Williams’ coming-out party on one of the biggest stages in all of college football.
Obviously, things worked out OK for both sides after that game. Caleb Williams went on to have a very good freshman year before following Lincoln Riley to USC. Williams went on to win a Heisman and eventually get his number retired. After his two-year stint with the Trojans, the Bears selected Williams with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. As for Spencer Rattler, he moved on to South Carolina, was eventually drafted by the New Orleans Saints, and has found a home as the team’s starting quarterback — for now, at least.
